COMMENTS:
Books are the bridge between total ignorance and partial understanding, so a resounding yes! from me.

Yes, I think it may help a person to become more intelligent.
It depends on what a person reads. If its something educational, then of course the person will get smarter if they can remember what they've read. IMO, reading mostly helps with people's literacy/grammar.
I can't stop thinking of that Bill Hicks line... 'It looks like we got ourselves a reader'
I believe it does. Reading provides the mechanism and building blocks upon which to build. And I believe that, like other abilities, intelligence can be improved (or at least fulfill more of its potential) through exercise/ practice.
Without a doubt! Read to your kids and encourage them to read.
Reading is a way to share the experience and insight of others. It educates us about things we would not otherwise know. So, a well-read person is more intelligent than one who is not.
Is the answer to the question 'Have you read (insert book title)...' All the more dismaying when the answer is 'I'll wait for the movie to come out'
well that explains my increasing stupidity

I've seen nothing but good benefits from it.
