I've thought long and hard about the concept of slavery, and I couldn't visit that on any living soul, even one I despised.

I say "NO". However, if slavery were STILL legal, and fully incorporated into the fabric of Amnerican thinking, I think our responses might not be so liberal. You are asking us to judge a concept as if it were still happening, but with the mindset of someone who has not experienced it and who has been enlightened against it. I believe there would some people who would still disapprove of it--probaly less, per capita, than in Lincoln's time, simply because by this time, slavery would have become an American characteristic. However, I believe I would be one of the dissenters.
They had food and shelter provided to them for their physical work. Some people still work as hard today and have to get their own food and shelter on top of that.Truth is a bunch of slaves stayed with there masters afterward. They knew nothing else in life and had everything provided.I wish my boss provided food and shelter for me. There is always abuse cases, just as much today. I'm an Irish American Christian. Irish were enslaved when they first came over. Christians were thrown into the lions den to die in Europe. I'd rather be a slave than get eaten by a lion wouldn't you? Wheres my reparations?
