"In the latest war of words, North Korea warned the U.S. that a pre-emptive strike would be met with an "annihilating strike and a nuclear war," the state-run media said Monday.

The threat was issued by an unidentified "analyst," quoted in the Korean Central News Agency.

"The army and people of the DPRK are now in full preparedness to answer a pre-emptive attack with a relentless annihilating strike and a nuclear war with a mighty nuclear deterrent," the report said.

The DPRK stands for the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

In Monday's report, Washington was accused of putting new spy planes on the Korean peninsula and a massive arms buildup. The U.S. was also slammed for staging war games in the region recently.

"This is a grave military provocation and blackmail to the DPRK, being an indication that the U.S. is rapidly pushing ahead in various fields with the extremely dangerous war moves," the dispatch said.

The report comes amid U.S. claims that Pyongyang has shown signs of preparing for a test of a long-range missile.

Intelligence reports say fuel tanks have been seen around a missile at the North's launch site on its northeastern coast. However, it's unclear if the rocket was actually being fuelled.

Regardless, North Korea claims it has a right to test-fire a long-range missile.

The North has also said it is willing to talk to Washington about its missile concerns in direct meetings with the Americans. However, Washington, insists it will only meet the North amid six-nation talks aimed at ridding Pyongyang of its nuclear weapons program." (CTV)

I think they would. The theory of MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction) or the pax-atomica theory are flawed.

Their leader is crazy enough that I wouldn't take this as an idle threat. Although he should consider that if he does follow through, there will no longer be a North Korea.

I suppose that there are people out there who are just stupid enough not to fear the possibility of having their worlds end in a flash of light and enough heat to melt diamonds. For their sakes, I hope that the DPRK isn't among that number.

I believe that most of their actions are posturing. However, if they felt they were in danger of being invaded, I believe they would use a nuclear option.

No because if there were serious they would have proved it by now. At first everyone thought they were but then they got the missiles to do so and never did anything. They only want to feel stronger. The same thing Russia did during the cold war with the Cuban nuclear missile crisis. They were only hoping that the U.S would back down from this. North Korea knows the U.S has enough nukes to take the country off the map and will do so if any nuclear bombs were to ever hit the U.S.

(possible,given their paranoia and internal need to maintain such)
WOULD their lifting device work?

And if it worked long enough to achieve destination,
would the detonation device work?

And if the det.device worked,
would the nuke work?

I fear they are All Bluster,
BS-ing themselves around the big boys' world,
in desperation, absolute desperation.
