I think Britain is, then South Africa or Israel.
I am British and I'm not going to go on about how supposedly great our military is, but I believe the combat achievements of the SAS, SBS, Gurkhas, Parachute Regiment and Royal Marines are very good.
I'd also like to mention the South Africans, hardly anyone seems to mention them and I have no idea why.
Not only that but Israel, South Africa and Britain have possibly the world's best trained airmen.
People probably dont mention South Africa much because they stay to themselves. They dont really get into wars they dont have to, but they do have a really good trained army.
From what i heard Spain and the United States have better air trained men. Who knows though you'd need a war between them to tell.
Britain is famous for having the best trained army in the world. We've always been the best throughout history, and we always will.
Also, if the American airforce is so well trained, then what about those friendly fire incidents they were so heavily involved in during the recent wars? American troops are poorly trained compared to most other militaries, and it really does show.

If Britain has the best trained military, then how come it took them from March 19, 1982 until June 14, 1982 to defeat of all people... Argentina.
Israel defeated the combined armies of Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, and Syria in SIX DAYS in 1967. The defeat a similar combined army of Arab countries in 20 days in 1973.
Britain... one less heavily armed (than the Arab ones) country in several months...
^By your logic the current conflict between Israel and Lebanon should have lasted a few hours rather than several weeks - and still going.
Besides, Britain had to fight a war 8,000 miles away, practically on Argentina's doorstep. I don't mind if Israel beat Britain in this poll because they are exceptional troops, I'm just saying.
Also FiddleFaddle, no disrespect but I've noticed you always seem to have a problem with Brits expressing national pride.
Unless the comments are excessively arrogant (and some undoubtedly are) I don't think our posts have to recieve rigorous 'pride' screening all the time.

Occupying the Argies was not the goal but yes we could have, purely because the Argentinians were spent and had no airforce left, the fawkland Islands would have made a good staging post.

the best trained army are the french and spanish legionairs this can be explained by the fact that the people who are in these armies are more then willing to give their life because they have no life outside the army the army is their life

u could have the best tech advaced equipment but when it comes to the job u fail.that is the usa.take for instance israel yes they got technologically well to do machines but in terms of trainining they combine it together and the results come seen and felt.the usa nothing somali is acase in point.take usa troop back to somali and the same humilation they will get which by extension is what they will get in iraq.israel on the other hand the wars they are engaged they leave once they have accomplished what they went to do.defeat ur enemy.so israel has the best trained full stop and bravo to them.
kishkumen: Israel fought against Hizbullah- a terror and gerrila organisation, which you can never defeat(look at Iraq and even the vietnam war- it's impossible). We never really defeated them, but it will take time for them to recover from the recent conflict. I'd have to say that my military had alot of problems in the last conflict and that's why we lost 116 of our best man to those arab ass holes- alt of them from comando untis. Every soldier that died looked beautiful - mostly blue eyed (jews from europe), you should have seen them on tv, so sad, they were our future, but gone to waste. I hope there is such a thing as heaven as i'm sure they're up there. And no i'm not gonna feel sorry for any innocent lebanese that died, because our citizens died as well - intentionally...

^ Correct, until the last sentence. Britain is the best trained. We know this because we have longer training periods than the Israel (and American) armies, we're more efficient, and are always chosen to train other troops.
There's simply no denying that British forces are the best in the world.
Look only one way to put it the British S.A.S, S.B.S, Royal Marines and army are best trained fittist and most successfull in the world the only reason the U.S military is successfull is because the size of america if britian was as big as the U.S we would whip there asses plus in either iraq or afganistan they couldont break through one of the enimies terrortoty so the royal marines had to do it then the americans took the fame there useless and all ways will be they need to wake up to the ral world and see the british are on going and will never give up (god save the queen)
Hi there look im not one to argue about military because i personally like the U.S and British forces but i have to say ive all ways wanted to see how the U.S. military worked i wondered if there were any programmes about the U.S. forces im not on about a documentry more like a televison proggramme with diffent ephisodes sort of thing if theres not then thats no problem but if there is could anyone let me know by replying to this comment thanks
Lemming - I agree with you apart from the Israelis who are the only ones I feel comparable to Britain on a historical basis.
Britain shades it but then I'm speaking from a British bias. If Israel won this poll it wouldn't be a disgrace.
I agree with you there: if there's one country that would deserve to beat Britain in this poll, it's Israel. They are the closest to us in these terms.
But I still believe that Britain is the best, due to our great efficiency and skill.
Isreali troops are actually quite pathetic..shows how little you know in military affairs. They are not even volonteers so comparing them to an all vlonteer force shows how ignorant you are.

the US has the best overall military, but the British SAS does whip some serious booty..but their urban combat sector, they're trained by the US
The British Army are without question the finest soldiers.
It hasn't lost a major conflict in five hundred years and it was the back bone to the largest Empire on the earth ever. All conflict strategy and terrain is recorded at Sandhurst. The British have fought in more terrains, more weather conditions, against so many variations of enemy and have all the information stored for future battle use. They are the standard all others aim to and Sandhurst is where the rest of the world comes to train their armies and Generals.
If you had a level playing field combat situation (same amount of soldiers) between any army in the world and the British the British would win full stop. The British Army is without any shadow of a doubt the world's best trained and combat experienced Army of either the ancient or modern world. It has participated in far more wars than the whole of the rest of the worlds armies put together and that is historical fact. It also raised and trained half of the worlds existing armed forces today. Even the Indian and Pakistan armies have a common heritage being formed by the British.
The initial training is the longest in the world for infantry and marines. Their assault courses put the USMC and special forces to shame as few can complete them and those that can in the US forces take twice as long as the British. Britain does not have the high tech equipment of the US Armed Forces due to the fact successive modern governments whose politicians have never served in the Armed Forces, continue to starve them of proper equipment and keep reducing the armed forces size. Individual Infantry and Armoured Regiments have accumulated more battle honours for their colors and gideons than the combined infantry regiments of any other worlds army. Sadly they are only allowed to display a very limited and selected number of battle honours on their colours and gideons. They do not display any battle honours for the American War of Independence (Amercan Revolutionary war) because it is the only war they ever lost and is regarded as a civil war fought overseas rather than a conflict against an enemy, kin against kin. Today they are also the best paid armed forces. The minimum initial training for non combat arms is 13 weeks, for artillary and armour it is 18 weeks and for the infantry it is 26 weeks (30 parachute Regiment). The Corps of Royal Marines of the Royal Navy is now 33 weeks.
Lemming when i say the U.S has a top of the line Air force I don't mean there will be casualities involved in war... Im sure what ever underdeveloped nation your from could'nt produce an airforce with a perfect kill rate.
Plus lets just get this straight while were in the 21st century. Britain isnt the most powerful military... Britain WAS the most powerful nation over 100 years ago but things have changed.. Now the U.S is the most powerful for the time being and in my opinion China will become the superpower in the future.

I don't see why people seem to think the Israeli army are so great. They're fighting on their door step of course they're going to put more into it. Now if the Israeli army were is say Norway quite frankly they would be screwed.

The russian spetsnaz, brittish S.A.S, Us marine, and navy seals, ALL come to train with our REGULAR soldiers. The canaidan forces still impliment a form of lethal self defence that has been banned in practice in 5 other un nations, including the U.S. Our soldiers are fitter, and have the highest minimum requirements for height, weight, strength and fitness, and field knowledge, as well as manditory first aid. Period. :p
