yes or no : sports : DO YOU CONSIDER CHEERLEADING TO BE A SPORT?

The English word "sport" is commonly defined as "an active diversion requiring physical exertion and competition." Yet it seems most people would classify cheerleading as something more or less like "an extra-curricular activity." Though it seems to me that it would take quite a bit of physical exertion to throw one of your peers several feet into the air or form a human pyramid comprising of 6 or more people. - More than I could put in anyway. - And then there are too many "national" cheerleading 'competitions' in the United States to list. What say you? Do you consider cheerleading to be a sport? Two statistics to consider are:

• 93 Catastrophic (serious injury resulting in severe permanent disability or death) cheerleading related incidents took place between 1982 and 2007 in the United States alone (67 of those in high schools, and 26 in colleges)

• 22,900 children were admitted to emergency rooms in the United States for cheerleading related injuries in 2002 — more than twice as many as in 1990

I suppose so.

On a side note, I hear Jamaica is petitioning the IOC to have dominoes included as an olympic sport.

I just don't know anymore...
