Hmmm...how would it benefit the church for a priest not to tell that a crime has been committed?

Oh let me count the ways.

I think that just some priests in the Catholic church might do it--but not all of them.
Voted : It's a convoluted interpretation of scripture.
I don't have time to look it up this morning (CA time) but in one of the Epistles Paul instructs a church in how to deal with errant members. While I have SOME appreciation for it, I don't FULLY agree with the (Catholic) interpretation personally, but... more later if you like.

but before it was probably based on patient doctor privacy, the church seeing a correlation in priest and confessor.
