Should regular reproduction be illegal as well? I don't like reproduction, but I think that if people have the right to reproduce, then they should also have the right to be cloned unless they have some serious genetic defect. I don't consider cloning any more undignified than regular sex and childbirth. I see what you're saying zorra, but the urge to reproduce is probably the strongest urge of all, albeit subconscious. Perhaps reproductive cloning could/should be an alternative for those who would rather not go through the messy business of old-fashioned reproduction. Just because I disagree with it (cloning) as a concept doesn't mean it isn't right for someone else. Thanks for making me think beyond what I wanted to think. You're welcome, Zig. It certainly seems that the reproductive urge is very strong for most people. I guess I'm weird in having little interest in reproduction-related activities other than cloning, though I probably would not choose to be cloned, either. I've said it before, and I was being serious. I don't want even the SLIGHTEST chance that a clone of me could be running around. I was able to grasp a lot of unsavory abilities at an early age, and I don't want there to be another lifeform out there with all of my capabilities and none of my moral upbringing. I understand the worlds of good that cloning can do for people who are incapable of having children, or for those who are in dire need of various body parts (in this, I speak from personal experience), but even the CHANCE of the technology being used for ill is too great a risk. I don't consider cloning any more undignified than regular sex and childbirth. by zorra on Oct 24, 2004 Much as I would like to take zorra's views seriously I just cannot stand them. How can zorra seriously compare a morally dubious scientific procedure to the mysterious, spiritual act of lovemaking?

Truthseeker, do you mean if someone cloned you without your permission? Unauthorized cloning would be a problem. I don't see how lovemaking is so much better than cloning. As I mentioned in another ballot (54604), the mystery to me is why people want to be around each other when most potential partners are just plain unattractive and uninteresting and when reproduction is physically painful for one party. Cloning doesn't solve the latter problem, but some day artificial wombs will also be a reality. By the way, what's so evil about cloning? Yes, maybe it can be used for evil, but what is evil about the technology itself? |
