Yes, I believe that America is turning into a police state. America has been turning into a police state since 9-11-2001. The United States government is using 9-11 as an excuse to bring in its un-constitutional policies that will further control the lives of the American public. Of course, a police state (especially when it's being brought into a democratic nation) doesn't come all at once. The government first brought in the Patriot Act and now the government is spying on US citizens without a warrant. It's allowed to arrest ANYONE it wants for no apparent reason (or they don't have to give one) and that person wouldn't even know. Now put that together with spying on citizens and you have a nation that's becoming a police state. The government can arrest you for the sole reason of disagreeing with it and you wouldn't even know and you wouldn't be able to do anything about it. I don't know about you all but to me that's going over the line. The govenment is abusing its powers little by little until finally it gets enough power to turn the US into an Orwellian society. Lets not forget the civilian inmate labor program. Massive, Army run prisons where millions can fit into. We have dozens of Guantanamos on US soil. Don't trust me, look it up. Not quite there, but stay tuned.

No. Otherwise this ballot and many other, the protests against bush, the democratic party, etc would not exist. We wouldn't hear about bushs low approval ratings, the government would control the media, we wouldn't hear about complaints from the opposition, they'd be dead or imprisoned, we wouldn't have a police force that is in fact limited by law, and punished when they overstep their boundaries. Herzog, we're not there yet. I knew that someone was gonna pull that line. Key words: Turning into Ok, well I don't see any evidence that the US is 'turning in to' a police state. I'm sure liberals made this claim when nixon was in power, then reagon, then bush senior, and they'll likely say the same thing the next time we have a republican president. It's politics as usual. When a democrat gets in power and republicans complain about how he's turning the US communist, will you give them any credence? That depends on whether he's really trying to turn the US communist. Plus, Democrats are just as bad as Republicans, it's just that Democrats do it differently. You don't think that the government violating constitutional rights of citizens is any indication that the US many turn into a police state in the future? Especially when it involves laws that tell the government who they can arrest and the rights of "criminals". And spying. LD: we've done that during many wars. As I recall throughout our history we've rounded up ethnic minorities in to concentration camps because we were at war with their homeland, arrested those who spoke out against the war on charges of sedition, created departments to control propaganda, suspended habeas corpus, and censored the news to avoid hurting morale. And all that was done when democrats were in office. And yet, the republic survived. Bush has done nowhere near as much as the democrats when it comes to suspending constitutional rights. We may one day end up a dictatorship, it's happened to other free nations from time to time, but it won't be anytime in the near future. Not according to those definitions. Turning? wasn't this ballot just done, like 5 times? 
No you are overstating the problem L.D,American is not a police state but this whole N.S.A thing gives me the creeps. Not *yet*. Give 'em the next election, and watch what happens... islam read the patriot act and then get back to me on that. It is not there yet, and some will point to this as 'evidence' that no such trend is underway. We are not a Police State today. But all of teh trends I see coming from the GOP-led government point to moving in that direction, over time. |
