The Governor of New Jersey ordered the flags at all state buildings to be flown at half staff in honor of Whitney Houston until after her funeral.

I think this is a joke! Usually this is reserved for those who have served the state or country honorably in some official capacity. Doing it for a drug addicted singer demeans the tradition and honor of this practice.

Tennessee didn't do it when Elvis died. California didn't do it when Michael Jackson died.

I believe it was more of a calculated political move by a Conservative Governor who has no minority support in his state. It's called Pandering!

Should the flags have been flown at half staff?

Flying the flag at half staff for a crack head? Not a good idea.

The 1/2 staff flag is to honor those who sacraficed in contribution to America. Servicemen and women, Congressmen and women, Senators, Presidents. I hardly think Whitney Houston qualified.

But NJ Gov. Fat Fattie also vetoed a bill that would have legalized same-sex marriage in New Jersey the same week. I think this gross encroachment by government on the lives of LGBT American citizens at the behest of the radical christian sect Gov Fattie belongs is much more importent than the accommodations of a corpse.

Thousands die every die. She's no better.
This happens all the time in cities across America , mostly unnoticed, I know in Elmira when a person of notoriety from the city dies, a local news anchor, the mother of a famous football star, as two examples I can remember this being done for.

It's usually to honor someone from the city, and only flown at half staff in that city.

I don't like to focus only on the negative things a person might have done. She died for being a drug user, I doubt anyone envies her for that. But she was a great singer, IMO and the people of Newark were proud and that is how they wanted to honor her. For me no big deal.
