It'll have to happen someday. Between OPEC's price gouging, a finite supply of oil, and environmental effects, one day it'll be necessary.

When gas costs $7.00 a gallon
by ABC [+]

I suspect it may happen before 2010 ... there is alreday a waiting list for most brands.
I HOPE
Wont happen as long as their is a Republican in the White House.
It won't happen while the oil and car companies hold the patents to the new technology, which they do own and do repress. FACT.
Duck, the government has nothing to do with. The development of hybrid cars was a free market venture independent of the feds. Which is exactly how this sort of technology should be developed. The last time we had a major oil crises fuel efficiency in automobiles increased drasticly, not because the government said so but because it was economical for businesses to develop that sort of car. Gas was expensive and people didn't want to pay so much at the pump.

I imagine hybrids will become more popular and more efficient as the price of gas goes up, it's as simple as that.

Long-time, and never as long as the Republicans are in charge.
cdub, these cars are being marketed and sold under a republican government right now. How do you explain that?
When the blood sucking oil companies are no longer able to make profits from oil.
herzog, sometimes I just like to be a dick and blame Bush for everything, this is one of those times. lol (but I admit it) He definitly does not want these cars in the near future to be popular but I think you are right its a free enterprise and nothing is stopping independant companies from capitalizing.
1 week after the oil runs out.
Yes, there's a free market. That said, most of these companies' executives are in bed with the government, which is already in bed with Big Oil.
i'll just drive a clean "diesel-engine" vehicle.
I intend to BURN STUFF for propulsion means, as long as I can.

It's my life's work to be dumb, and to add to the rising CO2 levels,
clean atmosphere be damned.

TECHNOLOGY will save MY ass, if not yours.
I intend to do Nothing about it, and just keep on hoping.
That's my plan.
That's Bush's plan
that's America's plan
and we're stuck with it.

KEEP ON BURNING STUFF: that's just The Right Way to get around...by burning stuff.
JUST SAY NO TO ELECTRIC CARS - they'll clean up the atmosphere - yuk!
