ethics : SHOULD SCIENTISTS CLONE LONESOME GEORGE?

(Look him up, he's really cool.)
He's a Giant Tortiose, he's the last one of his breed, so since there's no one to mate with he's considered extinct even though he might live 50 more years.
So should scientists plan to clone him when they can, they've saved his dna already, or should they let his breed end like others have. The problem with cloning him is that we could start to assume we can clone any animal and so it doesn't matter how we protect them. Also I guess there's nutty religious peple who think cloning is evil even when it comes to saving such a CUTE turtle.
