With the ultra-conserative crowd, whether they be Christian or Muslim, prejudice rules. (Great pic, btw) well, "marriage" has religious connotation, and you cant force the church to change its beliefs on the matter. However, the difference in legal rights you describe is obviously discriminatory, and should be addressed. I'd say that 'marriage' with it's religious ties should be left up to individuals (whatever ceremony and rules their family, friends, religious organization sees as appropriate) with absolute no meaning beyond the symbolic. And then have civil unions that convey the legal advantages/obligations that can be applied to any couple, same as any other contract (two adults, entering in to the contract voluntarily of sound mind, although that one may be debatable). You keep the religious sanctity of marriage for those who care about that, while getting the government out of what amounts to a religious ceremony which they should have no say in anyways. And of course some churches would keep things traditional, and so if you felt gays getting married violated your principles you could join such a church and get your marriage ceremony through them. Or if you wanted a symbolic, religious ceremony and you are gay you can simply move to a church that will allow it. And offers the same rights to everyone, without discrimination, in a legal contract that the US government can enforce without involving itself with organized religion. How long is a yonk?

My closest gay friends consider themselves "married" and have taken legal steps giving "rights" to each other. Things like Powers of Attorney and Durable POA for Health Care. They are each other's beneficiaries on insurance policies, too. Now, my close "straight" friends who live together (not legally married) have comingled finances only extending to banking accounts. Hmmm... Nuck: a yonk is approximately a year ;-) Your right, mojo. This is a tired issue. Obviously, marriage should not be denied to any who wish to tie the knot. It is a silly, boorish issue that politicians trot out for their brain-dead constituents to get inflamed over. They think this will cause the truly dead heads to vote once again against their own interests. And here's the bottom line: Gay marriage is coming. Get used to it, or find a soft spot on your wall to bite.

Hmmm, the religious thing. My husband & I were married in a lawyer's office, no religious trappings whatever. Wasn't terribly romantic, but we aren't religious (or into spending tons of money on things like weddings). Surely you can be an atheist and still get married because you love and adore a fellow human? ^yep

its not even really about marriage. many gay couples just want equal rights. people have no idea what goes on. there is a situation in which 2 men lived together as an official couple for 15 years. sadly, one died. the left behind partner had no rights at all. the family of the guy that died had ignored him all those years, yet when he died, they legally came in and tool everything and threw the living partner out. legally. he had no where to go. had no home, no assets, nothing. everything he owned they had owned together, but by law, the official living family of the partner that died had legal right to lock him out and claim virtually everything until things could be sorted out. the pets? the family had legal rights to. everything. the surviving partner had to beg, borrow and virtually steal just to fight them in court and in the end, all he got were most of the possessions he could prove were his either before the relationship, or those he paid for during. how sick is that? how sad beyond belief is that? it's a matter of some people wanting to control the lives of others and often using religion as their justification for it. People have a right to practice their own religion but they don't have a right to impose it on others, and that is what is being attempted and it's pitiful that they are getting away with it. If you don't approve of gay marriage - don't marry a gay. End of story - that should be all there is to it. Someone else wants to marry someone of the same sex - what business is it of anyone else?

I have a question, do the USA recognise civil marriage between men and women, if they were married here in the UK? I ask it, because we have civil unions between gay people now, would the US recognise the union?

dont go down th ereligious road they had there thig a thousand years ago!( unfortunatly they have bombs now!)at least the christians gave up killing a few hundred years ago i think?i am a gay skinhead have had the predajice card played on me! so have been been at the raw end from time to time, i believe that people belive what they belive! luckily with a very week goverment we can go that route! The seperation of church and state works both ways, just as the church is not allowed to influence government policy, neither is the state allowed to pressure the church to change theirs. Marriage is a binding agreement under God, the civil union is the legalized part of that, under the view of the government. Therefore that is why it should not be allowed. Voted : They should let them do wat they want to do
