WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE AN END TO ALL POLITICAL ADVERTISING?

[+] serious ballot by mojo
created Tue Nov 07, 06

Politicians pour millions of $$ of PAC money into it. It's almost 100% negative and uninformative. Polls show people hate it.

Why not abolish it, like cigarette ads?

Yes, I'd like to see it abolished.
No, I like it and find it edifying.

Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. It's really sickening. One thing I'll never forget is an ad I saw during the 2004 election. It was one of those "Swiftboat Veterans for Truth" ads designed to attack John Kerry's service in Vietnam. They were going through the motions when a message popped up on the screen: "...hacked off arms and legs...". It was there for like 1 second, but that's a very salient example of the worst of political advertising. ((And while we're at it, no more advertisements for alcohol and psychiatric medication.))

Sounds like a good idea.

Half truths and misleading ads should be abolished and if ads are found to be such, massive fines should be levied against whoever posts them...makes them, endorses them, and pays for them...

A colossal waste of money. They should invest those funds in Diebold and ES&S instead.

No. We need to hear about these people, otherwise who would vote, and what would they base it on?

But the pure smear campaigns that most politicians have been running ought to go.

When would this happen?

My answer is no, but the excuses given for the yes or no answers here are stupid. I'm against any restriction on free speech(hence, no on this anti-free speech question) but I certainly don't find political advertising "edifying," whatever the hell that means. People with wealth who want to spend their money publicizing a point of view can't and shouldn't be stopped by the government.
At some point we the people have to take responsibility for either seeing through or buying into the political bullshit.

Get rid of those Mail Ads. They clutter up my mailbox.
Or they need to pay US money to put their ad in our mailbox.

Politics and politicians, powerful putrid polecats..! )-:
Do away not only with the ridiculous political ads.. But also with the politicians and 'politics' itself!
In their place, highly qualified experts and technicians, entirely knowledgeable and effective, inane arguing and discussion not necessary! Wholly apolitical and intelligent. Tradition is very nice, but sometimes it becomes a liability or badly outdated.
