RELIGION: WHY DO PEOPLE GET INSULTED WHEN CHALLENGED ABOUT THEIR RELIGION?

[+] serious ballot by wideheadofknowledge
ACTIVE Mon Nov 06, 06 - Sun May 09, 10

What with Richard Dawkins riding high with his fantastic book "The God Delusion" I thought it was time to take a break from showing up 9-11 conspiracy nerds and focusing back on my favourite topic of old....

So why do people take offense at criticisms of their religion?

They have too much invested in their beliefs to consider they might be wrong
knee-jerk reaction
Innate hostility
Not understanding it well enough to defend it.
Defense of personal reality
Their own belief is not that strong, so they fear criticism
All of the above.
Because they consider their religion to be true.
Because what gives anyone the right to tell someone else what to believe?
becuase religion gives you hope
Is anyone 'supposed to' 'criticize' or 'challenge' other people's beliefs?!
Because religion's critics often make damn good points, and that leads to resentment.

Uhm... aren't you stereotyping a bit?

Only a little bit. I have met very few people who do not take offense at criticism of their religion.

But I'll concede that there are some who are grown up enough to accept the challenge or criticism head on.

Because for many it's a very personal belief. Whether a certain belief or the existence of any god can be proven or not is mute. The fact remains for many that their religion is very real to them because it works for them. It's so real for some that they would consider it no less than fact. Try to seriously tell someone that two plus two equals 7 or that the current U.S. president is Andrew Jackson and you'll often get the same type of defensive response that you would if you told a devout believer that their god is false. It's the same reason why many get fueled up in political discussions.

A personal belief is largely due to personal perception ispired by a believer's experiences and understanding of that in which he believes.

He that refuses to try and see from another's eyes is blind himself.

They may not be academically knoweldgeable about their faith and not be good arguers. They fear criticism because they would fall apart in a debate.

People don't appreciate any disagreement or hostility to their beliefs, especially since they're far more than just 'beliefs', they're Facts, and Very important Facts! Life and Death, Heaven and Hell! Believe, Or Else! Believe Correctly, or your Doom is sealed!
However, it Is fun to have dialogue with others, if possible!

I think that a huge problem with this whole process is the simple fact that a few can taint many. Someone is incapable of defending their beliefs and because of them the group as a whole are tainted.
