AIN'T YOU A EUROPEAN AMERICAN?

[+] serious ballot by LCD
ACTIVE Mon Feb 25, 08 - Tue Feb 24, 09

February is Black History Month.

I was watching some shows on PBS, and they kept referring to people as African American, Asian American, and (laugh) Native American.

If we are going to start labelling everyone by their origin, why not European American?

Voted : I'm Native American
LCD, why do you have such a problem with Native Americans? You get all upset over casinos on sovereign territory and now you mock what we chose to call ourselves. Or should I use the stupid and inaccurate term of "Indian-American"? Or do we not exist at all? Of course, if someone criticizes Asians or Asian-Americans in some way you get all upset. Or if they did as I tried to do which is explain - without agreeing - as to why someone might feel the way they do, then you call me and others a hypocrite. I'm having a bit of a problem with this ballot. Why does it matter to you how someone chooses to refer to themselves? You haven't left the choices open either so that someone can't vote for Latin-American, Jewish-American, Italian-American, Antarctic-American and so on. Or are you trying to make a point that everyone should assimilate to the point that we have no differences at all? That seems to be your view. I think that the differences and uniqueness of various groups is what makes the US stronger, not weaker. I enjoy watching television shows, etc that explore the diversity of various cultures. I don't laugh at it. I find it fascinating.

If someone wants to call themselves a European-American or even Martian-American, I don't care.

I love black history month!

"LCD, why do you have such a problem with Native Americans? "

lol, I don't have problems with native americans calling themselves native americans, I just thought it was laughable that the Natives are called "Native Americans" while "european americans" call themselves "Americans".

if anything American Indians should be called "americans" rather than the other way around.

Here, let me remove that chip for you, it looks heavy on your shoulder... :)

LCD, somethign just hit my brain germane to this.

Back in my Salad Daze in college, I knew a great many African students. In the company of one one day, I was stuppid enough to call myself African-American. He stood up and looked down at me (something, considering that I was 6'3" at the time) and intoned, in a voice that sounded like something that would terrify a Cosa Nostra hitman, said, "Sir, I am African. *You* are *American*."

About five years later, I did travel to Africa on a safari. He was right. I stuck out like an elephant in a hamster cage.
