The Eagles released Hotel California in 1976, leaving the mysterious lyrics up to the listener to decide the meaning of the song.

Eleven years after this song was released, Don Henley said "It was really about the excesses of American culture and certain girls we knew. But it was also about the uneasy balance between art and commerce." A few weeks later, Henley was also quoted as saying "It's a song about the dark underbelly of the American Dream, and about excess in America which was something we knew about."

That "American dream" thingy always makes me laugh. Reminds me of that film the Island, where all the clones are led to believe that they can win a weekly lottery to go live on a Paradise Island, just to give them something to live for. (The real "Winners" were off to be used as spare parts :o) Carrot on a stick anyone?... anyone?
