it always turns into a staring contest It depends if I'm talking to the person or just passing them. If I'm talking to someone, consistent eye contact seems only fitting. However, if I'm just passing by, eye contact takes on a whole different life. In animals, eye contact is generally seen as a sign of aggression. If it is a male I am passing by and he locks eyes, I interpret it as aggression unless accompanied by a head nod or a quick glance away. The same goes for females, though the aggressive tone is a bit different.

Voted : Eye contact establishes confidence and equality I'll look directly into your's or anyone's eyes to establish I'm equal to you on this earth, you're neither above me or below me. Failure to meet another with direct eye contact implies that you're either intimidated, lying or ashamed. It can have it's reprocussions though, like with judges, police and supervisors. On the other hand, as a contractor, its necessary to convey comnfidence to potential clients when bidding jobs.

Voted : I look into peoples eyes because their eyes reveal something about them. ^ Agreed. A lot of times, the eyes say more than what words do.

Voted : I look into peoples eyes because their eyes reveal something about them. Plain and simple. Voted : I look into people's eyes because it helps to make a connection with that person. When someone *avoids* eye contact, I tend to mistrust that person. Voted : I don't look people in the eye because it's rude. haha at the pic!
