Jehovah's Witnesses also believe in one God only (for Guest_cec81), the only ones who don't go to war, swear, have sex before marriage, divorce (unless auldtery is commited), the only ones that are completely united in worship, the only ones that recognize that God's name is Jehovah and that it must be preached throughout the earth and the only ones that follow the complete bible in everything they do. And it does not matter how long a religion has been going for. I am a Jehovah's Witness and according to the bible the first Jehovah's witness was Abel. At Hebrews 11:4-12:1 says: By faith Abel offered God a sacrifice of greater worth than Cain ... By faith Noah, after being given divine warning of things not yet beheld, showed godly fear ... So then, because we so great a cloud of WITNESSES surrounding us," (some bible translations differ, but it means the same thing in original Greek). But the point it is does not matter how old a religion is. God made his name (Jehovah - Psalms 83:18) known to the jews because of their forefather Abraham who was the only one righteous after the flood. And if you believe the bible all people who have died and not known God's name or his will, will get ressurrected in order for them to be preached "the good news". Any who do not come to worship Jehovah will die. Regarding dinosaurs, the six creative days were not literal days but, in the original Hebrew context, meant a period of time. Also, the great flood mens that radiometric dating methods (those measuring geologic time by rate of radioactive decay) supposedly prove these formations are millions of years old rather than thousands. But the main point is that the bible does allow the earth and the universe to be at least millions of years old. Immoral actions, which are sins, are not God's creation. We make the choice to commit immoral acts, it is not God's fault. And for your final question, the purpose of life is to serve God eternally on earth (Ps 37:9,11,29). As a Jehovah's Witness I believe that some will go to heaven (Revelation 14:1-3) to "rule as kings over the earth" with Jesus Christ. (Revelation 5:10) But, as was the orginal purpose back in the garden of Eden, to live for ever on the earth and cultivate it and serve God. God does want us to enjoy his creations for all eternity. Instead, we tortured him, humiliated him, and crucified him(there is historical proof of this, so it is true)Christianity is the most persecuted religion in the world. Many people (have been caused to) believe that it's 'important' to believe in 'one God', that is, be monotheistic.. I see that it is not 'necessary' to 'believe' any particular thing..!! Belief is not knowledge, but only a poor excuse, a substitute, for knowledge.. God, if any, does not 'judge' anyone..!! God is total Understanding, and totally Compassionate as well..!! No one is 'punished', and especially, not punished 'forever', as in the nonexistent 'hell'. If consciousness happens to 'survive' death, I propose that All 'go' to 'heaven', or a 'next stage' of existence..?! Everything is of Nature, natural, but not all things are desirable, of course.. It is wise to be kind, and friendly, and happy, and intelligent, forward looking and progressive.. Scriptures of any sort are largely nonsense, no doubt.. There is such a thing as a "radical Christian," but radical Christians don't force their religion down people's throats or say "my way or the highway" speeches. And because of that, they are free, and maintaining democracy. Now as my last point, Answer me this, smart guy: Other than the U.S.A. and Canada(religious freedom countries), which Muslim-run country has a well-run government like the U.S. and Canada? Apart from that, countries like Saudia Arabia, Iran, Turkey etc. are perhaps on par, near par, or even above par other neighboring countries; Muslim and non-Muslim. Oh, I also love it when the critics of Islam pretend to be Quranic scholars, and think they back themselves up with verses from the Quran which are usually pasted off some website. I'll bet 99% of the non-Muslims you see quoting all these Quranic verses do not even own an actual copy of the Quran, or let alone read an entire chapter. All they do is spew things out context, or they simply don't understand what they are reading. The Quran has never issued any blanket statement for killing non-Muslims. To whateverhappens: Let me explain this in high school Junior terms: In reform Judaism, we believe that any person who does good for others is a holy person. You're thinking of everything in your own narrow little box. Doing good things for other people is a form of worship to G-d, whether that's conscious or not. Thus an athiest who does good for others is therefore a person who is doing, what is, in my opinion, the will of G-d. What I'm saying, and listen carefully, that by living, simply by living, and doing good things for others, we honor G-d. You don't have to go to a temple, or belong to one, because Judaism is so different than what you've known. We don't go to temple to experience our faith. Real worship happens at home. Ie: One lights Shabbat candles and eats shabbat dinner with loved ones before one goes to shabbat services. The services, the prayers, are not nearly as important during shabbat as the spending of time with loved ones, of inviting those who are alone on shabbat to share food and drink, of giving charity to social causes (tzedakha). Temple provides an outlet for those who need it, but it's not for everyone. You need to realize that not everyone has to do what you do. The athiest who does these good acts and doesn't believe in G-d, is just as holy as any observant Jew. Read what I said before. What one DOES not what one BELIEVES. Most reform Jews also believe that G-d has revealed itself differently to different peoples. Thus all G-ds are considered to be the one G-d revealed in different ways. For those who are polytheistic, we would see that as aspects of the one G-d. But that's niether here nor there. Bottom line: No one HAS to worship anything. People should be happy, and if religion doesn't make you happy, I don't see why you should HAVE to do it. Shalom.

According to you, if I think "outside the box" then what I see is no purpose to our existence. ANYONE can be good to others, even the worst of people. The question you're asking was asked by Talmudic scholars for years...I would have to say this. In Judaism, the concept of a "good deed" is called a mitzvah. But, like a lot of Hebrew words, it means way more than that. Mitzvah also means "obligation." You don't understand that I'm not saying "Everyone goes to heaven." What I'm saying is that we believe there is another place we go to after death - "arivot olam," literally - "another world." But we don't know what it's like. We just know that it's a better place and that everyone goes there. Hell was invented by the Catholic church in order to get money for what they termed "Indulgences." The theory being if you did something bad, you could pay cash to the church for forgiveness of the sin. Seriously, no offense to Catholics. But they needed something that the indulgence would get them out of and so they adapted the biblical concept of "Shaol" into what everyone knows as the Christian "Hell." In Judaism, Shaol is known as a place where people who have not done good in life have to study the Torah until they understand true goodness, and then they go to the heaven type place. That's of course, the story. Again we don't know the reality - we never will. As to your question, I will say that the purpose of creation is to add to it. G-d creates a people purely out of love. G-d has so much love, incomprehensible amount of pure good, that it creates a people with this love. And it creates the beatiful rainforests and mountains and deserts. And the only commandment (of which there are 613) in the Tanakh (bible) that is never contradicted when all the others are is: Love each other. Do good for others. So, I see my purpose on earth to try to love people to accept and to embrace them and try to capture a tinge of the love G-d has for us. This doesn't mean quoting scripture, or thumping my bible or going to synagogue, it means being there as a human to help another human - no strings attached. I go to synagogue because I want my belief that everything good I do makes the world better for everyone else - regardless of any difference - to be reinforced. And because I want to connect spiritually with my fellow Jews who also say "Ken Yehi Ratzon" (May it be G-d's will). So in short, the answer: The purpose of creation is to honor our fellow creation(s). And that by honoring them, we, by default, honor our creator. Shalom.

To whateverhappens, addendum: So I would say a good way to look at it would be to say: If loving each other and being good to one another and helping those that can't help themselves with whatever we can, isn't a good enough reason to exist - then, frankly, I don't know what is. If you're only warming a pew on sunday, and saying prayers because you don't want to go to hell. Then where's your substance? That's a fear tactic. THAT is what I would call evil. Holding a threat over someone like that - to threaten about a supposed place we know nothing about. That's why I stress it's not what you believe. Your belief means jack shit until you do something with it. The bible was written as a guide on how to love one another, and so many have perverted it into hate literature. That truly makes me sad. To Rheez: I think your comment was well stated. Everyday we hear all about "muslim terrorists" but that's only because GW's definition of "terrorism" is not only cliche but self serving. You'll notice he only applies the term "terrorism" to countries that the US has a vendetta against. My example: Palestinian "terror bombers" blow themselves up on a crowded bus in Jerusalem. Terrorism? Yes. Israel bulldozes innocent people in refugee camps, and consistently denies homan rights to them - but is this terrorism, according to GW? No. Of course not, they're a "defense force." In reality, Israel has done far, far worse to Palestinians then they have done to Israel. As a Jew, I feel that my people have done horrible things and we need to make up for that. And just bacause we don't hear about terrorists in Columbia killing tons of citizens (Who happen to be Catholic), or terrorists who blow up children's busses in Ireland (Who are either protestant or Catholic)- doesn't mean that it doesn't happen, or that Muslim terrorists are just more numerous. And, folks, the Muslims that do perform acts of terror are not regular Mulims. They are to Islam, what those bible thumping, convert-or-die, "repent now" Christians are to Christianity. They're not the norm, or mainstream. A great book about all this is "The Eagle's Shadow," by Mark Hertsgaard - a Yale educated journalist. In subsequent years, when a Muslim army invaded a town, they would not allow anyone to convert to Islam for three days. During these three days they could kill as many men as they liked, pillage their properties, then rape and enslave their women and children. Only after a town had been decimated and all the young women and children that could be sold as slaves were captured, would the brutal campaign of Islamization begin, with its brutal mandate that all must convert or die. The Ottoman Empire was created by centuries of jihad against Christian populations. These Ottoman Muslims advanced deep into Europe, pushing all the way to Spain. Since WWII the west has of course advanced into a more tolerant and peacefully controlled democratic society. While Islam for the most part has actually regressed in the other direction. In western culture, acts of (homegrown) religious terrorism like those perpetrated by Muslims are almost unheard of. Timothy Mcveigh and the Oklahoma bombing is a rare example of terrorism that is remembered well in the minds of Americans, not only because of the lives lost, but because it was so unusual in being a domestic related terrorist event. I find them all very polite and pleasant to talk to. But both you and I live in the "west". Most Muslims in the west do not adhere to proper (strong) Islam. In fact, they may have moved to the west to escape the truly oppressive life and existance of "proper" Islam. Sometimes you will hear middle eastern Muslims criticise there western counterparts for "not living true Islam" or say "you are being currupted by Jews and Christians." I'm willing to bet many of the ones you know don't speak Arabic, the traditional language (text) of all Qurans. Most western Muslims have learned to recite Quranic verse in Arabic, but haven't a clue of what they are truly saying. The history of Islam is a history of intolerance, violence and discrimination. There is no such thing as "tolerant Islam". The real Islam is the radical Islam. What is known as the tolerant Islam is "less-Islam". Islamic societies are tolerant to the degree that they are not Islamic. The more they practice the Quran, the more intolerant they are. Many people claim Muslims such as Osama bin Laden are in fact the most faithful Muslims of all to their Islamic beliefs. But it is the quran's intolerant teachings of hate that I am after. Not necessarily Muslims themselves. However, we can't be to complacient about our more gentle western Muslims. After all, if the verses are their for the faithful, then we must assume that every Muslim at least has the potential to become a terrorist. Being that all religion comes from a need for socail control and psychological comfort in a complex world where truths are ambigious, I'd have to say that the best religion would be one that incorporates the most amount of intellectual discussion regarding natural observable processes.

The very concept of God sending messengers to be known and worshipped is absurd. Thirdly, examples of violence can be traced back thousands of years. You wish to select only the 20th century because of what is well documented and recorded. Well that's fine by me. However, ideologies such as fascism, nazism, and communism are not tought in Gospel scriptures of the Bible. Any bad acts carried out by the people of these ideologies were not acts of the Christain doctrine. They were simply the acts of bad people, many of who happened to be Christians. Colonialism to a certain extent is a part of the history of every tribe or nation in history, but I assume you wish to point to the colonialism carried out by nations of Western Europe. It matters not, because once again exploration, discovery and colonizing are not tought in the Christian (Bible) doctrine, regardless of who was doing the colonizing. But lastly, the reason I focus mostly on Islam is because Christianity and Judaism are exposed and already de mystified by other critics and scholars, many of who were born within Judaic and Christendoms. Also, these two religions are in my opinion on the decline. They will die on their own without my help. Most important of all, I have no business to criticize the religions of others, unless they become a danger to me. Besides, no one would pay attention anyway, because it is natural that the followers of different religions attack each other's faiths. This kind of religious feuding has been going on since the beginning of he history of mankind. We have to see our own errors not the errors of others. We are responsible for ourselves not for others. If we find our own mistakes and bring them to the light, it is because we love our people. But if we point out the faults of the others, they dismiss it and they become hostile and intensify their fanaticism. Apart from that, unlike Islam, Christianity and Judaism represent no threat to the peace and security of the world. Because when a Christian kills someone, even if the feud is between two religious groups like in the case of Northern Ireland, it is never inspired by religion itself. Nowhere in the Gospel does it says kill the people of other faiths. The Quran however is replete with such exhortations. For a Muslim all wars are religious wars. Christians do not go terrorizing people shouting Jesus is great, but the Muslims always shout Allah u Akbar to get ready for killing.
