The guidelines for cholesterol and blood pressure levels have recently been updated. The goal for a high-risk person's LDL (bad) cholesterol was 100; now it is 70. For people at moderately high risk, the goal was 130 but is now 100.

The result of these new guidelines is that substantially more people will start taking drugs to manage cholesterol and blood pressure levels.

The guidelines were written by nine of the country's top cholesterol experts; however, at least six have received consulting or speaking fees, research money, or other support from makers of the most widely used anti-cholesterol drugs.

Do you believe the new guidelines are meant to improve your health or to improve pharmaceutical companies' ledgers?

Improve both

I think its to improve both but since 2/3 of the "experts" are being persuaded by the pharmaceutical companies in some way or form, it was meant more to have a benefit towards them. If I happened to have bad cholesterol though I would try the pill and excercise and balance the diet, in no way do those pills work on their own.

good ballot. I saw the new guidelines, but I didn't immediately link that with the "bottom line". Interesting.

Great ballot! I was angered by those new studies. Not many people know that statins (cholesterol-lowering drugs) are VERY hard on the liver. No one who takes them should drink alcohol. Not many MDs like to make a big deal about that. It's all part of the pill culture - in this case, swallow a pill instead of modifying your diet or getting more exercise.
