RE: POLITICS - SHOULD MUSICIANS JUST SHUT UP AND SING?

[+] ballot by magdalenasdollar
created Mon Aug 09, 04

I heard this being debated on the radio this morning and thought it was an interesting topic. Apparently, some people feel that since artists have not earned their popularity through politics, they should not speak their views publicly. I think that's bull, a lot of them feel that's their purpose, like any politician. They're just using a different medium. Singing, speaking... I don't see much of a difference. Anyway, what do you think?

Shut them up
Let them speak up
Let them share view thru music
Let them share their view thru both speech & music

I don't pay to hear a singer give a lecture - if they want to express their political opinions in their lyrics, go for it!

Sorry, I keep getting 'bothered' and asked to do stuff at the office, so I couldn't really type that very intelligently. (:

I think they should shut the hell up and write some decent tunes, none of those musicians have put out any decent music in a decade.

Last time I looked, the First Amendment still stands. People express opinions that others disagree with, but that is their right in a *free* country.
by mojo on Mon Aug 09, 04 2:16pm [+]

that is true

Hmmm... we be tied now. Should I place my vote...? No, I won't... yet...

owch! dammit!

If the artist wants to give his or her views then they have to do it thru there music. I don't pay to hear a lecture on the economy I pay to rock, so if they can't do it thru that medium then shut the hell up.

There is alot of bands that have made a statement through music. Lately its mostly punk bands like Green Day (American Idiot) or The Offspring(Baghdad),but musicians like Neil Young (Ohio) and John Lennon (Give Peace A Chance) have been makeing statements with there music for many years.
by Leeman on Mon Aug 09, 04 5:19pm [+]

ARTISTS can do whatever the hell they want, you pigs, enough of them are already 'jumping thru hoops', the fact that some of them got you guys' attention is pretty neat I think.
by x__ on Mon Aug 09, 04 6:26pm [+]

"X_" If they want to make a statement they can, but to do it in a way that they aren't famous for and to cheat poeple out of a concert that they paid good money for is not right.
by doen5167 on Mon Aug 09, 04 8:37pm [+]

magdalenasdollar: That's called censorship. And I can't believe a country like the United States that constantly fights for freedom still debates this topic. Quite a condradiction in policies.

...free speech in a supposedly free country?

Jigsaw the question isn't should we stop the performers from making stands but should they do it during a concert when poeple pay money to hear them sing and not talk about politics.
by doen5167 on Tue Aug 10, 04 9:39pm [+]

If that's what they want to put in their music, fine. It's their right. Don't like it, don't listen to it. It's called freedom of speech.
by Jigsaw on Tue Aug 10, 04 11:26pm [+]

"it's NOT censorship, it's economics. they're paid to perform, so JUST perform and keep their politics to themselves. "

Music can be whatever you want it to be. It's a form of expression. Lyrics have been opinionated and biased since before any of us were born. That's the way music is. There's no general definition of what music is supposed to be. If it was wrong to have opinionated lyrics, the law of supply and demand would take over. Guess what. People want to listen to it because they keep buying it.

"censorship would be if a governmental authority told them they couldn't say something. "

Ever heard about the conflicts between the FCC and Eminem? The FCC like it or not is the American form of media censorship. They jump at any chance they can get to shut something down if they legally can.
by Jigsaw on Tue Aug 10, 04 11:34pm [+]

If they want ot make a stand in there music that fine, the problem is when they break up a concert to talk about politics.
by doen5167 on Wed Aug 11, 04 2:22pm [+]

Looks likes ome people aren't grasping the concept of free speech.

I think they should shut the hell up

these performers are paid to sing (or jump through hoops since most of them are no smarter than circus animals). therefore they should just sing and leave out politics. their "right" to express themselves is not applicable, their duty to entertain their fans is the only reason they are on stage.
anonymous Aug 9

So there you have it. It is up to performers to shut the hell up, and it is the duty of their audience to tell them when to shut the hell up. Mr anonymous chillingly said it most clearly

their "right" to express themselves is not applicable

Thanks mate. Glad the First Amendment is so respected out there.

I say if they got something to say, do it in the music, or shut the fuck up. They all think they have this status that'll some world leader is going to listen to their opinions, when the leaders couldn't give a rats ass about their opinions..Most of these musicians a among the rich and probably barely remember what it is to be a common person. This goes for both the left and right. Shut the fuck up!!
