You always see these people applying to get on reality TV shows that vow to "transform" normal, plain looking people into stunning idols of beauty. Sure, the effect looks great to the eye, but once you get down to health problems and follow up surgeries; is the initial surgery even worth it in the first place?

I thinkthe odd surgery for say an over large nose or something minor is fine. Its when they have more and more until they look hideous thats silly.

Depends on the situation. Sometimes it can be practical...burn victims for example. They're probably going to have health problems later on anyway, so if they want to feel better when they look into a mirror, then they by all means have every right to do so. (This doesn't mean they should feel like they have to just to be accepted, either.)
