It's been that way for 15 years now.

That's an exageration. Technology has revolutionized the making, marketing and selling of music. Until very recently people could either listen to a handful of radio outlets, buy tapes n cds at music stores and go to live venues. Now there's a million outlets for people to satisfy their desire to listen and obtain music. The internet, mp3, even satalite radio. The music industry has been severely fragmented. What is considered mainstream today is in reality only listened to by a small percentage of the population, even among youth. The industry no longer hold the mass of folks by the balls. What they do still have great control over are folks on the bottom econmically and socially. These are the people most likely to still go out and buy cds at a store, watch the grammys and other crap on commercial network tv, even go out to movie theatres. That is why you see many shows on network tv increasingly geared towards specific minority groups. The networks know the bulk of their core audience has abandoned them for cable and other persuits that new technology has opened up. What they are left over with are a disproportionate number of economically and socially disadvantaged folks, who in turn are disproportionately minority. People who are the least likely to have embraced new technology. The networks, hollywood and the big music industry aren't suddenly embracing minorities out of the kindness of their hearts, they're doing it because they need to survive econmomically and they know they've lost and are probably never going to get back the core audience they once held by the balls. The industries core and most desirible audience and customer have deserted them. This is not meant as a put down of hip hop, minoriies or anything, just a reality check. At the end of the day it is just another business.
