IS GEORGE W. BUSH ACTUALLY TAKING A VACATION, OR IS HE HARD AT WORK?

From thinkprogress.org (August 24, 2005):

Bush Denies He’s On Vacation

President Bush has faced intense criticism for his insensitivity in taking a leisurely, 5-week vacation while the country is locked in an increasingly violent war in Iraq. His initial response was to defensively defend his right to relax, stating indignantly, “I’ve got a life to live.”

That didn’t go over so well with the American public, so the White House spin machine game up with a new line: Despite what it looks like, President Bush isn’t actually on vacation.

According to the San Bernardino Sun, White House spokesperson David Almacy “said the reason that Bush is in Crawford, Texas, is due to the renovation of the West Wing of the White House.” Almacy stated:

He’s operating on a full schedule; he’s just doing it from the ranch instead of from the White House. The only week he had officially off was this last week.

Keep in mind, President Bush has spent the entire month of August at his ranch every year of his presidency.

So, which is it? Is George W. Bush on vacation or is he hard at work?

"President Bush is vacationing in Crawford, Texas. He will be vacationing for five weeks. That's a long time. I don't think he has an exit strategy for his vacation either." —David Letterman

Uh.. these vacations make me nervous ever since 2001, when all hell broke loose.

If he's so hard at work, then why can't he stay in D.C. and do said work? This has always been one of my major sticking points with Mister Bush, the fact that he takes these vacations. (Or that he even HAS a vacation house to go to. President Clinton never had such luxuries. He KNEW the "pain of the working man". Mister Bush only knows the pain of falling off his bike.)

Wonder if cashiers at Wal Mart get to go somewhere else in the US to do their jobs for 5 weeks when they get burned out?
You know working people in this country can use this for ammo...our president believes that the vacation time alloted to most workers in Europe --4 weeks-- is a proper amount of time to take off for the average joe...what's good for the big ol goofy goose should be good for all the ganders out here.
