We had the greatest empire the world has ever seen and unlike all other nations when their empires fall, the queen is still head of state in most countries and we have very close links with them. Also we have been faced with some huge threats from the superpowers of the past spain and france to the evil of the nazis and now the network terorists, but we have not been defeated we also have the best people who have a great sense of humor, based on taking the piss out of ourselves, and we are the most resisiliant, many peoples would have paniced in the face of the attacks on london not britons, londons were back at work on fri by tube and by bus because we were not afraid. It is funny how you have to compare the US to all of europe in your discussion Meteor7 By the way no other civilization invented flight, electricity and objects that work off electric. Everyone in our country with few expection can take daily bathes. Have electricty a computer two cars. The US poorest people live like middle class citizens of most nations. We were the first free country and the limey is just mad we sent them back to Britain. I don't think anyone can argue any civilization compare to the US in overall standard of living and changing the way people live. I mean come on think about it. And we still have a huge commonwealth following. The US has never had an Empire ..not really..they have a few bases in Japan and the Phillipines and such but that definately does not constitute an Empire..a large majority of the worlds historians consider the British Empire to be the Greates by virtue of the size of the Island Nation that ruled it all...even now with the Commonwelath you have a great "Kind of" Empire...such places as Australia, New Zealand and others. I also know this due to the fact i am a serving NCO with the British 3rd Battalion the parachute regiment and wityhin our ranks we have commonwealth soldiers from Fiji, St Vincents, St Lucia, Jamaica, South Africa, some australians, New Zealanders and then look at the Royal Ghurkah Regiments...rifles and others...those little Nepalese guys are without a doubt among the toughest elite soldiers on the face of the globe and come under the commonwealth. Im proud to be British...Truly Proud of the empire we had our history and still today because of the men and women i serve with. For the fact that given our numbers we are the most feared, proffesional and ferocious Armed forces out there.

The only reason the US is the way it is today is because you were cowering in your country whilst the entire world was at war and only decided to do anything when it was safe for you to poke your heads out to take a look whilst other countrys were spilling blood to keep their people safe. I don't think people understand the logistical problems the British had during the war of independence. 1: We had only 10,000 "soldiers" there and they weren't the battle hardened Redcoats like in europe. 2:To get supplies to America took a long time, we couldn't just dump it in a plane and fly it over. 3: It took many months to ship supplies and orders around, any reports sent back to Britain would be months out of date when they arrived. 4: you used terrorist tactics and guerilla warfare to fight which was and is now very hard to combat against. and 5: We had to fight three powerful nations at once as well as deal with traiters and rebels in America and other countries. And in all fairness and with no insult intended i think if we wanted the colonies in America back we would have sent a huge force after dealing with that frog prat nepolion and just grind you into the dust. I suppose the powers that be in Britain in those days saw some potential in the US and we haven't been disappointed.

In history? I do not agree the US is the greatest in history. I have to say China is the current greatest country for good or bad. Of course, that could change once another country survive 5000 years with their most of their culture intact and still have a big effect on world affairs.
