Anyone else think GTA4 is overrated?

entry #10. posted on 6:54pm May 15, 2008 - mood: happy

Don't get me wrong, I love playing Grand Theft Auto 4 on my Xbox 360, but frankly, it's not quite as interesting as San Andreas was. That, and I hate that you can't change the view a little when driving. I'm not used to being that close up...

I am trying to get a couple of teams together for bowling ball dodgeball. I am having trouble getting people to sign up for some reason, so if anybody is interested, please reply.

A word on Tibet

entry #8. posted on 10:52pm May 04, 2008 - mood: drunk

A lot of people don't know this, but Tibetans may actually not be any worse off under Chinese rule than they were under the rule of the Lamas. The lamas were, believe it or not, just as totalitarian as the Communists, and frequently hoarded the wealth of the country. At least that is what some sources are saying...

that may well be
but it was via the will of the people. Communist regime that marched into that country enforced their presence by force.

that being said, even a benevolent dictator is a dictator, and shouldn't allowed to exist, but those people who embrace such deserve everything they get.

It's been sixty years
I believe that the Tibetan people's quarrel with China is that they invaded in 1951 - Tibet had been a sovereign nation until then for well over a thousand years. I don't believe that China invaded Tibet to liberate its people from the lama oppressors (or the feudal theocracy that existed prior to the 1950s) but more to take over its natural resources. In 1959, Tibetans rose up against the Chinese invaders, and were brutally suppressed.

But currently, China is replacing Tibet's language, culture and religious practices with its own, regardless of what Tibetans may want. Tibetans are becoming the minority in their own home.

It's probable that Tibetans are materially better off now than they were before the Chinese came. But that was almost 60 years ago - the same can likely be said of every country on the globe...

But as far as I can tell, Tibetans aren't free to govern themselves and they don't enjoy basic human rights.

Not to say that pre-1950s Tibet was a Shangri-La of peace and tranquility... it was feudal, and primitive. Like in every country, there was probably some measure of corruption and crime. But, if China had not invaded, Tibet would have in all likelihood, evolved in some way towards a more more modern and democratic state, with a better standard of living for its people. The Dalai Lama who heads the Tibetan government in exile has stated that he would like to see democracy in a free Tibet, with special attention to women's rights.

And now a word on SPANKING

entry #6. posted on 4:20pm Apr 23, 2008 - mood: frustrated

I know, I run it into the ground, but here's my two cents anyway...

Why is it, that people like to blame crime in the U.S. on lack of spanking when:

1) 75% of parents STILL admit they have spanked their kids in the past
2) More than half of the population still believes in spanking
3) Most criminals were spanked as children (just ask any prison inmate)
4) 8 of the 10 countries with the lowest murder rates in the world are countries where spanking is illegal (all but Canada and Qatar I think, though spanking is restricted in Canada now, so maybe it's more like 8.5 out of 10)

what children experience in childhood
deeply influence their whole life.

make them experience violence in childhood, and they will first submit themselves as victims, then later in life become perpetrators themselves.

and the cycle continues.

Congrats on 4:20 spanking:)
As for why people want it it is because of our barbaric nature. Some feed it and others don't.

Re: cycle continues
Sometimes, LCD. I am hoping to be one of the few in each generation who break the cycle. I do not plan to spank any of my children, no matter what. And I will not let people near them who aren't willing to respect my feelings on this matter.

4:30 AM wakeup call Friday morning

entry #5. posted on 12:10am Apr 19, 2008 - mood: confused

As many have probably heard by now, there was a 5.2 earthquake in the Midwest, with the epicenter in Illinois at 4:30 AM Friday morning. We did feel some of the activity here in Toledo, but no damage here.

All I know is I felt my bed shaking about that time, and when I woke up this morning, I noticed half of my blankets were on the floor (I have a lofted bed).

Hope anybody on here who is closer to the epicenter is okay, and hope there are no major damages.

Look, I'm sorry to those who have been banned, but you should have followed the rules, and it wouldn't have been a problem. I have to admit I'm getting a little sick of the false and derogatory comments being made about this site by those who seek to destroy it. Seriously, grow up...

Yay! Ann Arbor Film Festival this week!

entry #2. posted on 6:27pm Mar 25, 2008 - mood: happy

If you don't hear from me much this week, it is because I am balancing being a student with classes in Toledo, while trying to attend as much of the Ann Arbor Film Festival as I can (there is about an hour drive between the two). Screw sleep! Might wanna stay off the stretch of U.S. 23 between Toledo and Ann Arbor for a few days if you don't want me for a hood ornament...

Elevator etiquette

entry #1. posted on 5:33pm Mar 24, 2008 - mood: confused

Okay, you're trying to get off the elevator, and some jackass is standing right in front of the door, and won't get out of your way so you can exit. Worse, he's trying to crowd on. It is proper to allow people who are exiting the elevator to do so before you board. Sheesh...
