THE HOULA MASSACRE, AN EXAMPLE OF MEDIA FAILURE?

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora said on Monday that one person had been killed in an Israeli air strike on the southern border village of Houla, rather than 40 as earlier feared.

A resident said about 50 people had been found alive under the rubble.

"The massacre in Houla, it turned out that there was one person killed," Siniora told reporters. "They thought that the whole building smashed on the heads of about 40 people ... thank God they have been saved."

This story of 40 dead was accepted at first glance by the western media and reported without question. It turns out to be somewhat exaggerated, and fortunately the Lebanese PM in this case had the integrity to tell the truth.

But given the readiness with which the media accepted the initial claims, not doing any actual investigation on their own, doesn't this cause concern? This time they confessed and offered the truth, but how many of these 'massacres' have been exaggerated beyond their real extent based entirely on the unsubstantiated claims of local leaders? Leaders who may not have the same integrity as Mr. Siniora. Leaders who may seek to gain propaganda value by expanding on the truth. So that a few corpses turn in to dozens, or hundreds.

Doesn't this make all of the casualty figures the western media so glibly hands out every evening a little suspect?

Yes, they should do more investigation on their own before reporting the numbers told to them
No, some errors are acceptable
No, these people always tell the truth, this was the one exception that proves that rule

The problem isn't just with Reuters, the AP, etc. Blame also rests on all the outlets that run these articles and photos without even bothering to check to see whether they are accurate or not. Of course, Reuters and others also use "stringers" (like Adnan Hajj of doctored photo infamy) in many areas. It appears that they do little in the way of examining their background (to determine bias) prior to hiring them or using their photos and stories.

It is a failure, unfortunately one in a long string of them.

Compared to the errors made by the Bush Administration and the neo-cons over the past five years, the media appears to be nearing perfection.

Overall, the media has done a pretty good job documenting Israeli war crimes.

It is, of course, inevitable, that the neo-cons will be hostile to the anyone, or any institution, that points out the truth about what they, and those they support, are up to.

The motto of the corrupt neo-cons should be: "Kill the messenger."

Cranky: The problem is that the media has done a poor job of documenting Hezbollah war crimes. Specifically, that Hezbollah drew first blood in this campaign.

jyl: "death is what war is about", does that mean that news agencies should feel free to use reports of dubious origin without verification to inflate the number of deaths beyond what is reasonable?

What if the US military stated that today we killed 40,000 militants and no civilians. Do you think the media would mindlessly parrot that information as they have for the various enemies of the US? Or would they perhaps look in to it a little deeper?

I think we should hold our media to a higher standard than this.

The reason they feel they can get away with this sort of thing (and altering photos) is that for the most part they can. They can present whatever they want and most people won't question them.

It's only lately that the internet has provided an outlet for common people to point out the lies these people try to pass off. God only knows how many they got away with before this, and how many continue to slip under the radar.

But people on this site don't seem to care.

I guess lying is ok, so long as you do it for the right cause.

"I guess lying is ok, so long as you do it for the right cause."

That's certainly the Republican credo.

And if Bush was condemned for every single mistake he'd ever made, he would have been impeached a thousand times already.

Still, even though the media makes mistakes (even in the favor of Israel and El Presidente Bush, on occasion), the competence of this loose aggregation of professionals far exceeds the well-oiled fascist machinery of the Bush Administration.

I lost alot of respect for Reuters as a news agency after the doctored photo thing came out and now this story makes me doubt their creditablity even more.It just goes to show you that if you want to be informed you need to sample a wide variety of news outlets.

The media is consumerist. It wants to shock audiences. The moer shocking, the more consumers may be attracted. It is for this reason some may be too ready at times to accept higher numbers when it is not confirmed 100%.
