The jihadists were around long before the neocons had power. The neocons need jihadists or a similar group to keep the people afraid.

thc: Agreed, they were around. However, IMO, they have never had so much power/ following.

Even without Mister Bush, there are still a few million more small minds to take his place. Check the polls, if anyone doubts me. As for the second, if the jihadists were suddenly to pack their bags and go back to wherever it was they were lurking before 9/11, those same millions of small minds have been overwhelmed by those who, for various reasons both proper and improper, have had their views of the issues turned.

Now why couldn't I have put it as simply as thc did?

No.

But I suppose some people actually believe bin laden and al-qaeda magically appeared the moment bush took office.

Poor education, that's what I blame.

Islamic terrorism existed well before George W. Bush. No, they don't need him in office to sustain their cause. They did just fine when Clinton, Bush 1, and Reagan were in office. Or for that matter, Nixon, Ford, and Carter.

Totally unrelated. One does not need the other. The causes for Islamic extremism go well beyond the current administrations actions.

Of course. The new Cold War. America needs an enemy to have an identity as the good guy who rides in on a white horse to save the planet.

Nope, jihadists were around long before George W. Bush came into office.

And, even without jihadists or a similar group, there will be people who agree with Bush and try to keep him and his styling of the GOP.

Funny how many people seem to misread teh question. It isn't *did* they need each other, it is *do* they need each other in order to maintain there respective power bases.
