[+] serious ballot by Cathexis

Politicians are always going to try to use rhetoric to their advantage, of course, and spin their accomplishments in the best possible light. But there is a tipping point at which debate becomes so divorced from reality that the spin becomes outright deception?

Yes, and we're at/past that point
Yes, but we're not there, yet

Semantics, Mr. Cathexis. "Spin" and "Propaganda" are two names for the same phenomena. Anytime deliberate deception is used, it is both propaganda and immoral. So, welcome to American Politics.

Somewhere, there's a rear-view mirror with enough magnification to see that point...

marg: IMO, it is a continuum ... and it has been moving.

And no, I am unwilling to chalk it up to "that's politics." We get the 'politics' we accept and I, for one, am not going to be quiet about its continued devolution.

China claiming 'activist beat himself up', Hezbollah claiming that Israel started the current conflict, Iran claiming its nuclear program is only for civillian purposes, Burma claiming that Aung San Suu Kyi is a terrorist, North Korea telling its population that it is supposedly more successful at raising the lifestyle of its people more so than South Korea, and of course Western leaders telling the developing world to liberalise their economies, while they themsleves have their own rigid protectionism that they refuse to negotiate on. Etc.

Indeed.
