Voted : Yes: It builds character
It should also be taught to some parents. The ones that can't shutup at youth sports games, or even tryouts.
Then again, "show me a good loser, and I'll show you... a LOSER." :P (just thought I'd play the devil's advocate)
I am truly amazed that the vote is so close (5-5, at the time of this comment).
Voted : No: It condones mediocrity
No. Taught to lose? No reason If you mean taught to accept that in life there will be losses and wins, sure. But we live in a winner-take-all world so might as well pull out all the stops to win.
I do not believe they should be "taught to lose", however when there are so many schools that have NO failing grades for their elementary aged students, that's just ludicrous. Children should be given fair scenarios to engage each other in, in which there are winners and losers, and each side should thoroughly explore why they ended up where they did. Teaching children without an option to fail ill prepares them for life, in life, if you screw up bad you get fired from your job, or worse, cause harm to others or yourself.
Folks, let me clarify -- the question is not 'Should we teach kids to lose?' It is 'Should we teach kids HOW to lose' -- that is, how to behave WHEN they lose. And since, in any contest, there can be only one 'winner,' that leaves us with a LOT of 'losers' -- how are they supposed to behave?
