A POSSIBLE REASON WHY ISLAM PRODUCES SO MANY TERRORISTS . . .

The carpeted room is full of children in skullcaps crouched on prayer mats, reciting verses from a holy text. Some mumble the words under their breath; others sing them out. They rock back and forth as they chant, their disparate voices blending into an ethereal melody. The children, ages 7 to 14, are full-time students, in class 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, even in the summer. But they are not studying math, science or English. Instead, they are memorizing all 6,200 verses in the Koran, a task that usually takes two to three years.

It would hardly be an unusual scene in Pakistan, Afghanistan or elsewhere in the Muslim world, where religious schools devoted to memorization of the Koran and Islamic studies are common. But this class meets in the prayer room of a small mosque in Flushing, Queens, that caters mostly to South Asian immigrants and their children.

Schools like this one at the Muslim Center of New York are rare in the United States, but are emerging, especially among South Asians, as the Muslim American population becomes more established.
. . . . .Because the task is so difficult, most of the children at the Muslim Center study only the Koran while they are enrolled in the class. Some parents try to tutor their children in other subjects on the side. But for the most part, it is after the children finish that they work to catch up in other subjects in preparation for going back to regular school.

By not offering instruction in other subjects, the school may be inadvertently running afoul of state law, according to city and state education officials. Private religious schools like the Muslim Center’s program are required to provide “substantially equivalent” instruction to that offered in public schools, they said. But tracking every school-age child who leaves the public school system can be difficult.

This is a common theme in the arab world and it seems they've brought it with them. They don't really seem to value an education, not a real education anyway.

Children are forcefed the koran all day and never learn any useful subjects. So, when they fail later in life, having been deprived of a worthwhile education, all they have to fall back on is their religion, and we all know how that ends up.

Do you think that muslims would solve many of their problems if they'd work to de-emphasize religious indoctrination and instead place more of an emphasis on the basics such as math, science, reading/writing, etc?

Yes, they should redirect their priorities and yes this is causing them problems
No this isn't causing them problems and they should stay the course
They dedicate enough time to worldly learning, religion is more important
They should embrace the peaceful doctrines of Islam, and ignore the violent doctrines of Islam.

I agree that if more emphasis were on math, science, etc that ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT and EMPLOYMENT OPPURTUNITIES may progress better. Better economic factors may reduce tendencies toward terrorism.

I read a similar article in the Washington Post.

The NY Times article posted by you mentions these people are from South Asia several times, as in “But this class meets in the prayer room of a small mosque in Flushing, Queens, that caters mostly to South Asian immigrants and their children”, and .” but are emerging, especially among South Asians, as the Muslim American population becomes more established”.

South Asia comprises the following countries: Pakistan, Nepal, India, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Burma and Sri Lanka.

You say “This is a common theme in the arab world and it seems they've brought it with them. They don't really seem to value an education”,

None of the above countries are located in the Arab World. Maybe, rather tha disseminating misleading information you should be concentrating on your own education, world geography would be a good starting point.

Lol, are you denying this is what is going on in the arab world? I think it's clear to everyone that this is exactly how it works in the middle east.

crows: you could try answering the question.
by herzog on Thu Aug 17, 06 7:01am [+]

There are approximately 1.2 billion Muslims in the world, 60% live in Asia. Only 15% of Muslims are Arab, while almost one third live in South Asia.

The four nations with the largest Muslim populations, Indonesia (194 million), India (150 million), Pakistan (145 million) and Bangladesh (130 million) are all in Asia. China also has a population of 39 million Muslims. Despite this many Americans perceive the Muslims in Asia to be on the periphery of the Islamic core based in the Arab Middle East.

You say “Lol, are you denying this is what is going on in the arab world? I think it's clear to everyone that this is exactly how it works in the middle east”.

I am saying LOL when you get the basic facts obviously wrong in not being able to differentiate between Arab countries and those of the South East your argument has not foundations to hold it up and so falls in a messy heap. Lol

So you're saying that education levels in the middle east are stellar? No need for criticism there.

I disagree.
by herzog on Thu Aug 17, 06 7:17am [+]

And as most of those countries were converted later on, by jihadis or missionaries from the middle east, their practices are influenced by the arab world.

In the same way christianity is heavily influenced by european culture.

Now, can you answer the question? Has a poor education, with the emphasis on religion rather than math/science, played a role in the relative marginalization of the arab (or islamic if you prefer) world, leaving them with few options other than poverty and religious fervor?

Or are you unable to answer the question without either violating your PC code, or looking ridiculous?

A good secular education is vital for everyone.
by FiddleFaddleOnLSD on Thu Aug 17, 06 7:22am [+]

And if it makes you feel better you can apply the question to all muslim societies. I can't think of a single one that places the appropriate value on a secular education. Pakistan is hardly a prime example of a well educated populace.
by herzog on Thu Aug 17, 06 7:23am [+]

Voted : They should embrace the peaceful doctrines of Islam, and ignore the violent doctrines of Islam.
I don't know herzog many of the terrorist, especially in the recently attempted terrorist attacks were highly educated middle class men.Bin Laden himself got the benefit of a Western education yet he still turned to extremism.A lack of a secular education definately is a factor in the radicalizing of muslims as it does not cultivate a skeptical attitude.I think a more important factor in the radicalizing of muslims is the hateful sermons being preach out of mosques.
by Corrupt on Thu Aug 17, 06 8:41am [+]

^Which proves that education takes a back seat as a result of the constant brainwashing of the Islamic hate doctrine. The Quran is written in Arabic. Is it any wonder that Arab-Muslims are among the most violent and hateful toward infidels when it comes to terrorism?
