IS THIS MAN A RACIST?

Last week at a campaign stop, Republican Senator George Allen singled out the only non-white member of the audience--S.R. Sidarth, a young Indian-American volunteering for his opponent, and called him "macaca" (a racial slur meaning 'monkey'). He went on to say, "welcome to America." (Mr. Sidarth was in fact born and raised in Virginia.)

Sen. Allen is a contender for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008. Here are some other details about him that might raise questions of racism:

* He used to display a noose—hanging from a tree—in his law offices.
* When running for governor he admitted to displaying the confederate flag in his home.
* As governor, he proclaimed April as "Confederate Heritage and History Month" and issued a proclamation calling the civil war "a struggle for independence and sovereign rights" (but nothing about slavery).
* He opposed the creation of a holiday commemorating Martin Luther King, Jr.

So, is this man a racist? Just wondering.

At some point, I believe Republicans will haev to address the deep- seated racist elements that are in their party -- either to condemn or acknowledge.

Actually, it takes a lot for me to brand a person with that label. I hate labels. But, I've seen this man in action for years. The cap fits.

Is Senator George Allen racist? Did Pancho Villa wear a big hat?
Of course he's racist and the majority of his constituents are proud of it. He's also stupid for representing the Republican Party in that light.

But I'm biased. I once had a little shouting match with the man. Lukcy me, he declined to press charges.

Yes, it appears that way. And he's not the only one either. Just think of all the local politicians who's faces you'll never see in the media. And say far worse.

'He used to display a noose—hanging from a tree—in his law offices.'

Could be a symbol of lynching, or just his support for strong penalties. Inconclusive.

'When running for governor he admitted to displaying the confederate flag in his home.'

Probably racist, but again, inconclusive. The confederacy stood for many things, slavery being only one of them. More evils have been perpetuated under the union jack, but that's hardly seen as a symbol of hate.

'As governor, he proclaimed April as "Confederate Heritage and History Month" and issued a proclamation calling the civil war "a struggle for independence and sovereign rights" (but nothing about slavery).'

It was largely about independence and states rights, he's correct there.

'e opposed the creation of a holiday commemorating Martin Luther King, Jr'

Probably not a good idea, I'd say this is likely motivated by racism, but I'd like to hear his reasoning before giving any definitive answer.

Singling out the indian in the room and calling him a racial slur, most definitely racist and makes the other points irrelevent.
