DOES LEBANON ILLUSTRATE THE RISKS OF TRUSTING THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY?

The UN immediately intervened in the war between hezbollah and Israel (the Sudan genocide was pushed to a backburner even further back than the one they were on). They brokered a peace treaty with steadfast resolve, among promises for a robust peacekeeping force, especially from France who saw this as a chance to reclaim their role as a world leader.

So far they've come up with a few hundred troops from muslim nations that do not recognize Israel, and France as the strongest proponent of the peace treaty and a major power among the UN has promised 200 troops, no more and they will only stay until February.

Clearly this is a failure. They don't have the troops or the desire to keep the peace between what amounts to a minor regional squabble between two minor regional powers.

Does this give you confidence in the 'international communities' ability to successfully intervene in major crises in the future?

Yes, this was a minor foul-up, I can list all their successes below (please do)
Yes, this was actually a monumental success for them
No, I have no confidence in their ability to maintain the peace if a major conflict comes up
It really helps that Israel bombed those previous UN troops
Many in the international community don't trust Lebanon.

COMMENTS:
As of right now I question the ability of the UN to break up a bar-room brawl, let alone even address their mission statement.

Either by incompetence or indifference (or both) the UN has shown itself again and again to be completely incapable of performing even the most rudimentary tasks laid out for it.

I eagerly await the justifications that will surely follow this revelation.

It's difficult for hundreds of nations, with many diverse cultures, religions, economies, and political agendas to come together in one effective legislative body. The UN shows this. It is a good concept, but, like anything, has much that could be improved.

"They don't have the troops or the desire to keep the peace between what amounts to a minor regional squabble between two minor regional powers."

Israel is a "minor regional power?"

That statement is just plain stupid, even for a rightwing propagandist.

You'll also note that the Bushie Administration offered zero troops for the important mission of protecting Israel.

I'm sure that everyone is just lining up to send UN troops just so that Israel can show them the same respect as they did before - by targeting more UN outposts and killing more UN troops.

A) that post was not targeted
B) what the hell good are peacekeepers if they're only able to send troops to areas that they know for a fact they will not be in any harm?

So what, they can keep the peace in hawaii while they sip pina coladas?

Seems a 'peacekeeping' force would expect to be inserted in to areas where there is not currently peace.

I wonder if this anti-UN sentiment permeating America has to do with our decision to invade Iraq without the support of the United Nations.
by Applerod on Tue Aug 22, 06 10:26am [+]

I think the anti-UN sentiment in the US is simply because most americans are clever enough to see the UN for what it is: a worthless organization that hasn't the slightest interest in doing anything except launch in to tirades against the US and Israel.

Disagree? Ask the Sudanese what these peacekeepers have done to help them.
by herzog on Tue Aug 22, 06 4:54pm [+]

^Has the U.S. offered any peacekeepers for a U.N. force to Sudan, either?
