Hmmm. I have mixed feelings. Since it strikes me that so many of our species are self- sentered, callous, and greedy ... I'd say that *some* kind of external ethics constraint is needed. Religion, for all of its imperfections, can act as a constraint.

Or something like it.
Cathexis - The 'constraint' which you mention is often nothing religious at all, such a fear of reprisals. Your reference to 'many of our species are self-centered, callous, and greedy' is true, but many of those are already 'religious', and still self-centered, callous and/or greedy. I am not sure of your point.
I agree with Cathexis. Religion can draw a line on what is considered right and wrong. But more people have died in religious wars than any other so go figure. I guess if you're corrupted to begin with religion doesn't make much difference.
Many, many wonderful people know and practice their religious faith. Many scumbags have none. Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, etc etc, ad infinitum. Some scumbags know religion. Some nice decent people follow no religion.

Most people need something to believe in, particularly if that something explains all those pesky philosophical questions about existence.
