No. Go to the emergency room where they will have to give you the medication.

... and then, if you can't pay, put a lien on your house? Just wondering.

Of course, the only palatable (sp.?) answer is no; but--forgive my ignorance--do hospitals place liens on people's houses, or refuse emergency health care based on income or the lack thereof?

No, of course not.
If you really cannot afford health insurance and needed meds, there are options. In the big city near us there are county hospitals which help. Patient Advocates can further assist in getting needed meds. Don't listen to the whiners who claim otherwise. There are also 'sliding-scale' clinics. No lien, nohow.

^depends upon each states individual collection laws.
by MO_ on Mon Aug 28, 06 2:30pm [+]

^ As Mo said, it depends. Here in Virginia, it has happened. Not to deadbeats but to working stiffs who can't afford to eat, heat their houses, AND get their meds.

I don't know where our departed friend SocialSecurity75 lived, but he was an example of just such a situation.

mojo, don't give them ideas...

COnsidering all the fraud and waste I've seen during my sojourn through the medical system, a little charity can be spared.
by Truthseeker013 on Mon Aug 28, 06 3:30pm [+]

Oh, Sweet Nancy on a jungle gym. The patient should first ask the prescribing doctor for help/direction. If the doctor can't/won't help, next step is a Patient Advocate, who has a wealth of information for indigent patients. By the time this step is reached, help should be available. But, before contacting the Chairman/President/CEO of AMA, ask locally. Help is available. People must ask.

They have to give you the medication. If you own a house, shouldn't you be able to afford insurance??
by FiddleFaddleOnLSD on Mon Aug 28, 06 4:58pm [+]

Very good question.

by Steelhamster on Mon Aug 28, 06 9:09pm [+]

They do give you the medication, if it's lifesaving. If you are at risk and they even ask for your insurance first go ahead and get your doctors keys, because you'll be driving his porsche home. It's illegal to demand proof of ability to pay before offering life-saving care.
by herzog on Mon Aug 28, 06 9:13pm [+]

And I heard that in canada they're expecting a major shortage of nurses and doctors as a result of government regulations.

Don't worry canucks, when you get tired off waiting for your free health care you can always come here and get actual healthcare.

Of course not.

I hope that is not the case with you or yours.

No, it's wrong and people are dying, despite the lies of corprorate whore conservatives, from not getting the medical care they need.

The people of this country need and deserve national health care.

"Don't worry canucks (sic), when you get tired off (sic) waiting for your free health care you can always come here and get actual healthcare."

Untrue.

Actually, right now it's the Yanks who are pouring into Canada looking for medical care. It's millions of uninsured Americans who are missing out on "actual" healthcare.

Y'all know how many people can't understand that Everyone's good health is a benefit to Everyone else?

Didn't ss75 say he had to sell his house to pay for his wife's medical expenses, I can't remember but someone said in some states you have to deplete your accesses before you are eligible for medicaid
by larrynelmira on Tue Aug 29, 06 12:28pm [+]

^I'm taking that means also selling your house.
by larrynelmira on Tue Aug 29, 06 12:29pm [+]
