The concept of appeasement is commonly associated with Western Europe giving in to aggressive territorial demands made by Nazi Germany prior to World War II.

However, the term is now being used in reference to Iran's desire to develop a nuclear enrichment program.

One difference is that Iran is wanting to engage in an particular activity on its own territory, and is making no demands on other nations. Quite the opposite, in fact, it is largely the United States that is making demands on Iran.

That being the case, does is still mean that the West is appeasing Iran if it does not physically intervene in Iran in response to Iran's refusal to obey the commands of the Bush Administration?

I believe that the constant use of the Nazi period to try to influence decisions today is wrong. Hitler and the National Socialists were the biggest bunch of social darwinists the planet has ever known. They were hell bent on world domination so war with them was inevitable. Of course I am using hindsight here and not taking into account the reality of the situation in the 1930s. Iran will not use its nuclear weapons against anyone unless they want to commit mass suicide and that isnt very likely. Even suicide bombers dont take their children with them. The alternative to appeasement is constant war against any and every threat that exists in the mind and in reality. Appeasment is ultimatly a pointless word to use unless you happen to be telepathic and have the ability to see the future. Otherwise you will have no way of telling your future Hitlers from your future Al Capones.
