WHICH IS BETTER - FREE SPEECH OR RIGHT SPEECH?

Within the Buddhist eight-fold path to end suffering is the concept of right speech, as part of ethical conduct.

It can be generally defined in these terms -
- to abstain from false speech, especially not to tell deliberate lies and not to speak deceitfully,
- to abstain from slanderous speech and not to use words maliciously against others,
- to abstain from harsh words that offend or hurt others,
- to abstain from idle chatter that lacks purpose or depth.

Free speech is defined as being able to speak freely without fear of censorship.

A Canadian judge's ruling in 1990 defined free speech as -
- The free flow of ideas essential to political democracy and democratic institutions" and limits the ability of the state to subvert other rights and freedoms;
- it promotes a marketplace of ideas, which includes, but is not limited to, the search for truth;
- it is intrinsically valuable as part of the self-actualisation of speakers and listeners;
- it is justified by the dangers for good government of allowing its suppression.

However, in the West, free speech is limited by several doctrines including libel, obscenity, blasphemy, national security concerns, and more.

While right speech is more defined by ethical standards, and free speech as a civic right within a political structure, if you had to choose between one or the other - which would you rather exercise?

COMMENTS:
Free speech is objective. Right speech is subjective. Therefore the two cannot be compared.

Good thing I'm not a Buddhist; I'd have nothing to say.

Ironically, if it wasn't for "free speech" no one would have come up with "right speeech."

Unfortunately, using right speech can land you in anything from a stern dressing-down to a prison cell.

Who is to say what is right speech and what is not?If I do not believe in God I could say that all religious speech is false because there is no proof that God exist,logically or other wise and therefore all religious speech including the Buddhist eight fold path is not "right speech" and it should not be expressed.I take freedom of speech over "right" speech anyday.

nobody has the right to decide right speech for others, and "right speech" is often only wrong speech used by a sycophant to please authorities or to 'fit in'.

when you say only what is considered "right speech" you risk creating more harm in the long run and often do.

Free speech clearly. With speech the most heinous ideas and thoughts are still out in the open and able to be countered with more speech. When speech is stifled it doesn't end the ideas just pushes them underground and radicalizes them
