COMMENTS:
9/11 was a bigger event that took up more of the media's attention in all its aspects. The only thing that the recent Israel/Hezbollah conflict is appearing to be is a small regional conflict, one in a stream of such conflicts in the Middle East. While they get coverage, they, somewhat understandably, get less than 9/11, because conflicts in the Middle East are viewed, rightly or not, as less important than one of the few attacks against the US on its soil. Another reason might be the scale. 92 incidents of non-violent anti-Semitism, while very deplorable, don't quite amount to the scale of the 9/11 attacks. When something happens that effectively puts a nation in a state of shock, it consequently gets more coverage than a double in the number of anti-Semitic incidents in one country. That said, this definitely should be getting more coverage.
I agree with choices 1,2, and 4. People who are insecure often need a whipping boy to feel better about themselves or to use as a fall guy to answer the question of why they themselves are such utter failures. The Jews have always been small in number, so they are easy pickings for the bullies on the block. I think the press treats them with the same disregard.
It isn't just in Europe where it is being somewhat minimized. There are many many attacks of Jews in the US. Pretty much every Synagogue has to hire security/police officers to protect people especially since the Seattle attack in which one person was murdered. There are these types of attacks the world over.
Doesn't seem to be much outrage against this from the left. They were furious about predictions of violence against muslims, but now that real violence is being committed against jews they seem to have lost their voice.
"Following 911... authorities braced for attacks against muslims to go on the rise. Every politician was sure it would happen, it never did." "We heard far more about the hate crimes against muslims that were predicted to happen (but never materialized)" Untrue. "There were some incidents of harassment and hate crimes against Middle Easterners and other, "Middle Eastern-looking" people, particularly Sikhs, due to the fact that Sikh males usually wear turbans, which are stereotypically associated with Muslims in the United States. At least nine people were murdered within the United States as part of retaliation. Balbir Singh Sodhi, one of the first victims of this phenomenon, was fatally shot on September 15. He, like others, was a Sikh who was mistaken for a Muslim. In Europe a similar backlash against Muslims became apparent. Because of this, the European Monitoring Centre on Racism and Xenophobia (EUMC) undertook the largest monitoring project ever into Islamophobia. The report, authored by Jorgen Nielsen and Chris Allen from the University or Birmingham, England was published in 2002 and noted that a greater receptivity to anti-Muslim and anti-Islamic feeling was widespread." (Wikipedia) "FBI sees leap in anti-Muslim hate crimes 9/11 attacks blamed for bias... Hate crimes against Muslims soared after Sept. 11, according to an FBI report released Monday... The most dramatic change noted by the report was a more than 1,600 percent increase in reported hate crimes against Muslims -- a jump from 28 hate incidents in 2000 to 481 last year. The report listed intimidation as the most common hate crime against Muslims last year, with 296 incidents. There also were 27 incidents of aggravated assault and 66 incidents of simple assault against Muslims, the report said. The report also showed that white people were the most common offenders in hate crimes -- 65.5 percent... Anti-Muslim incidents were previously the second least reported, but in 2001, "presumably as a result of the heinous incidents that occurred on Sept. 11," they became the second-highest among religious-biased incidents, second only to 1,043 anti-Jewish incidents, according to the report. (San Francisco Chronicle)
"Doesn't seem to be much outrage against this from the left." Doesn't seen to be much outrage against this from the right, either, except as an excuse to bash Muslims. (herzie ballot category: "Muslim Bashing", cross-referenced with "Media Bashing," "Liberal Bashing," and "Pro-Israel Propaganda."
"Hate crime reports up in wake of terrorist attacks ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- Reports of hate crimes against Muslims and southeast Asians have risen exponentially across the U.S. in the wake of Tuesday's terror attacks. The backlash has prompted Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to ask President Bush Sunday to ensure the safety of Sikhs living in the United States. The Council on American-Islamic Relations says it received more than 300 reports of harassment and abuse from Tuesday through Thursday night, nearly half the number it received all last year. Khalid Iqbal, director of the Washington, D.C.-based advocacy group, says cases range from families being spat and yelled at, "Go back to your country," to assaults on people and businesses. In Mesa, Arizona, a man was charged with first-degree murder Sunday in connection with a series of shootings that police said could be a racially-motivated response to last week's terrorist attacks on New York and Washington. Mesa police said Francisco Roque, 42, was being held on a $1 million bond in the killing of Balbir Singh Sodhi, 49, a Chevron gas station owner. Sodhi, from Punjab, India, was shot to death while doing landscaping outside his business Saturday afternoon... Attacks on Sikhs have also been reported elsewhere in the United States. They include a Queens, New York man who was shot in the forehead by a BB gun as he left a temple. He had gone there to pray soon after the attacks. And a Fairfax, Virginia man was nearly driven off the road by two vans on his way to donate blood. A Hindu temple was also firebombed in Matawan, New Jersey last week. Sikh Dharma's official website -- Sikhnet.com -- reports 133 incidences of hate crimes and harassment since Tuesday. Attacks on Muslim-Americans have also been reported. In Texas, mosques in Irving and Denton were attacked last week in the wake of the terror attacks. On Sunday, the Islamic Society of Denton in Texas, which suffered only minor damage by the Molotov cocktail attack last week, held a prayer vigil. Joining the Muslim prayer were the city mayor and 15 other church groups. "It is a gathering of peace, prayer and friendship. Baptist, Catholic, Presbyterian..." Irfan Ali, a member of the mosque, said, trailing off. The day before, the mosque received a gift from the student body of the University of North Texas: 50 posters with greetings, flowers, condolences and prayers. The student body president had delivered it in person, Ali said. (CNN, 09/17/2001)
