This seems strangely reminescent of ballot #84388. I think you owe herzog royalties, Jinn.
Voted : Life without freedom is worse than death penalty
My only problem with giving someone 60+ years in a cell is the insane cost of it. People who are undoubtably guilty of violent crimes should be snuffed out cheap and fast, even if that is letting them off light.

Oops! I did a quick check but somehow I missed that one. I select a jury...I think!

It's not just the lack of freedom that makes a life in prison worse than the death penalty, it's having to survive amongst the other predators. Imagine having to worry about someone murdering you all day, and being trapped in a cell with another lunatic. Much worse than death in my view.
i dunno - life in prison sounds pretty miserable - but when you're gone - you are GONE! i'm not much in favor of annhiliation - ain't no hope or second chance there.

I have a cousin who's doing federal life for drug dealing, and the last time I visited him, he looked about sixty, and he's six years younger than I am. Being on the inside has killed him from the inside out.
"This seems strangely reminescent of ballot #84388. I think you owe herzog royalties, Jinn. wink" I wonder if it would be at feasible to have a system like that. Where you can list what ballot inspired you and the user that made that one could get karma based on how many votes the new one recieved, or something. It might be interesting to try, although I have no idea how it would be implemented. But yes, I do deserve royalties and I will collect, one way or another. . .
And I'd have to say the death penalty is worse. I've never had to choose, but just about everyone who has been in that situation has argued fervently for life in prison over the death penalty. I'll trust their opinon on the matter.
And of course being on death row isn't exactly quick, you're going to be in jail for about a decade before you're executed, so it's not exactly a choice between a quick painless death and a lifetime in prison (not that life in prison means necessarily spending the rest of your life in prison).
