COMMENTS:
Now that I've published this ballot, I see that this is a topic which has been flailed to death here. I apologize. Too new to know.
Voted : PC improves people's minds
I have often said in the past that most of what we call political correctness is simply good manners. Political correctness is sometimes inappropriate in situations where blunt honesty is the only way to conduct a situation but I think that PC has brought some benefits to society.
If people want to be PC in their personal lives, that's fine. Empathy is a value I was brought up with, so I'm all in favor of not hurting other people's feelings. I don't call it political correctness, it's just being polite and well-mannered. But when PC makes its way into the court system that's another story altogether. There are rude and offensive people all over the world - there always have been, and there always will be - but you can't legally regulate people's thoughts and words (sticks and stones). If they want to be racist and bigoted, that's their choice, and they will be rewarded by getting nowhere in life. Discrimination should not be tolerated though, but that's a different issue.
By the way Margaret, where did you get that cartoon? I think it's hilarious, and I'd like to forward it to some friends.
Voted : I could give a damn about PC?
It was silly and irrrelevant the day after it began...
I have often found that that a good many of those who take pains to be "politically correct" or so middle ground that they stand for nothing often have (not so) hidden biases and prejudices. Often those who aren't so politically correct have fewer biases or prejudicial attitudes.
There's a fine line between insensitivity and oversensitivity on the basis of individuals interacting with each other. Political correctness tries to steer people in the direction of sensitivity, but it has become so ubiquitous that to some people it is a social norm -- for better or worse.
