HAS POLITICAL CORRECTNESS BECOME SILLY AND IRRELEVANT?

[+] serious ballot by margaret123
created Sat Sep 09, 06

During the past several decades, America has focused more and more on political correctness. The educated, sophisticated crowd always took great care not to offend, or to reveal oneself as biased, prejudiced, or bigoted toward people, races, genders, beliefs, and so on. No real attitudes seemed changed, but the outward behavior of many Americans changed. I believe that all PC does is push people's real views into the closet. After a time, these people don't believe they are prejudiced, racist, or sexist. They believe the crap they've mouthed for a long time.

It has been my personal experience that reality cannot be denied, and no matter how hard you try to deny your real thoughts and feelings, they will out themselves somewhere. What do you think about PC? Has it helped us or hurt us as a society?

PC improves people's minds
PC is stupid and makes us liars
PC has been necessary, but not anymore
I could give a damn about PC?
Yes, PC means expediently lying when telling the truth is not convenient

Voted : PC improves people's minds
I have often said in the past that most of what we call political correctness is simply good manners. Political correctness is sometimes inappropriate in situations where blunt honesty is the only way to conduct a situation but I think that PC has brought some benefits to society.

If people want to be PC in their personal lives, that's fine. Empathy is a value I was brought up with, so I'm all in favor of not hurting other people's feelings. I don't call it political correctness, it's just being polite and well-mannered. But when PC makes its way into the court system that's another story altogether. There are rude and offensive people all over the world - there always have been, and there always will be - but you can't legally regulate people's thoughts and words (sticks and stones). If they want to be racist and bigoted, that's their choice, and they will be rewarded by getting nowhere in life. Discrimination should not be tolerated though, but that's a different issue.

By the way Margaret, where did you get that cartoon? I think it's hilarious, and I'd like to forward it to some friends.

It was silly and irrrelevant the day after it began...

I have often found that that a good many of those who take pains to be "politically correct" or so middle ground that they stand for nothing often have (not so) hidden biases and prejudices. Often those who aren't so politically correct have fewer biases or prejudicial attitudes.

There's a fine line between insensitivity and oversensitivity on the basis of individuals interacting with each other. Political correctness tries to steer people in the direction of sensitivity, but it has become so ubiquitous that to some people it is a social norm -- for better or worse.
