Gun ownership isn't always bad. Although pawn shops that keep selling guns to gang members, like one in Philly that did so for many years before getting shut down, are the other side to that story.

If the violent, criminal scumbags know that many of the good people are not just sitting ducks and are armed with deadly weapons, they might think twice before trying to victimize someone.
Remember, ALL VIOLENT CRIMINALS ARE STUPID AND/OR LAZY COWARDS.

To answer your question: yes, of course. I prefer to live in a society that permits licensed ownership of firearms as opposed to one that does not.

No it can't.

There will always be accidental or avoidable fatalities if people have guns.

Yes, there are probably a majority of people out there who can use guns responsibly. There is also a very dangerous minority of gun owners who are threats to themselves and others. My view is that if you have your gun locked up and unloaded, you aren't likely to use it in a moment of anger to kill someone. I also think that parents with children should lock their guns up, and if they do not, they should be held criminally responsible for the actions of their children who use the gun to harm themselves or others.

I still say that a person's more likely to be shot *by* that gun than shoot anyone *with* it.

^ Or combines, or dogs, or scuba diving, or factory equipment, or bush airplanes, etc... The list is endless. Many of those cause more accidental deaths than guns.

I also think that parents with children should lock their guns up, and if they do not, they should be held criminally responsible for the actions of their children who use the gun to harm themselves or others.

Many states already have such laws and prosecute the parents in the case of an accidental or intentional death or unjury. That's about as far as the law can go, other than to ban them alltogher. To go any further, you'd have to ban stupidity. Which is the root cause for every gun accident.

"wideheadofknowledge: the same argument can be made for automobiles--perhaps even more so latley."

Guns are designed with one purpose in mind - to kill.

Your reductio ad absurdum defence holds no water.

When people shoot other people with guns they are not abusing or misusing them. They are putting the gun to the use for which it was designed. When someone deliberately runs someone else over it is an abuse of that vehicle - it's not the same thing.

A bit late I suppose, but so are knives widehead. A good weapon indeed.
