SAYING I LOVE YOU

[+] ballot by larrynelmira
created Tue Sep 12, 06

As long as I can remember , my parents have always said they loved me when leaving, my dad still does this, and that’s great, but when I’m around my friends or even if he drops me off at school, he says it and others here, I know it’s terrible that I feel this way, but people look at me, I’m a little embarrassed. I know he loves me, and I love him and I don’t want to hurt his feelings, but I wish he wouldn’t say it around my friends.

Do you think I am wrong, and what would you do in this situation?

You rotten, ungrateful kid
This is not your dad's problem
its neither
It's a drop in the bucket of eternity
You'll appreciate it more once you're older

COMMENTS:
Hey, Larrynelmira: This is your problem, not your dads. I would trade a million dollars if my dad had told me he loved me anywhere, anytime, anyplace. Never, never, never be ashamed of someone saying they love you in public or private.
How can you possibly be embarrassed by love?

I understand completely why you feel embarassed Larry. As a fellow male I know how its unusual for males to openly show affection to each other this way. I would feel uncomfortable too.

To be honest though, theres not much you can do about it is there? Saying anything to your dad would hurt his feelings. And its a blessing that your dad says that to you really. Your friends wont care if they are real friends, particularly as you get older.

I don't believe I said it was my dad's problem, I know it's mine. I also think it might be different for girls.

Margaret

I think its something that a female would find hard to understand to be honest, no offence intended.

I think you are right lil_ape , I can't tell him not to say that. Thanks for the advice

while you may not realize it now, (you are at an age where I can understand how you feel) but you will eventually realize that it's a wonderful gift, which you will no doubt pass onto your kids when you grow older.

it takes a REAL man to say "I love you".

What lil_ape said.

You may not realize that your friends don't receive this wonderful gift. It may even be that they are better having heard your Dad speak of his love. You are so blessed (I think you know that). Let Dad say it. Never be embarrassed about being loved, dear larrynelmira.

I know, and now I feel like crap for even thinking it and seeing in words makes it even worse.
by larrynelmira on Tue Sep 12, 06 3:12pm [+]

Get a grip, tell your Dad it's embarrassing saying that in front of your friends, he'll understand.

Still i think you're fortunate, some kids go to school with black eyes.

I think the picture you chose for this ballot says it all.

I understand where you are coming from larry, but i think when you are your dad's age, especially if you have children of your own, you will wish you had turned to him and said "I love you too dad" and not let the embarrassment bother you. It's one of the nicer things about aging - embarrassment becomes less and less of an issue. don't feel bad, from what what i recall being embarrassed by one's parents is a pretty normal part of growing up. I tell my kids - deal with it - it's part of my job as a parent LOL.

be real cool about it and say "Love you too Dad" and give him and point and a wink ;)

My father never once said "I love you." You don't know how lucky you are to have a parent say that to you.
Now I'm a parent and I say it to my child all the time! You need to learn to say it back to your father without being embarrased, and instead be proud!

If it makes you feel any better i can't remember my dad EVER saying he loved me, even once. But he did show it in some ways.

He took us camping...and to Disneyland once a year

I think your friends just think you have a cool dad, and you shouldn't be embaressed, just maybe you don't say it enoguh, try saying "hey, love ya dad!" first...try it :)
