ARE BASHERS OF THE UN, DISENGENUOUS?

[+] serious ballot by Steelhamster
ACTIVE Thu Sep 14, 06 - Wed Dec 13, 06

There are some on this site and the current administration who will bang on about the failures of the UN.

Lets look at that, the US will veto resolutions it sees, rightly or wrongly, not in the best interests of the US.

It then turns around and bemoans the UN for voting against them.

Surely if the US want the UN to take action on a myraid of problems around the world, it would lead by example and support more resolutions aimed at restraining rogue nations that are actually a threat instead of mickey mouse conflicts around the globe.

Yes
No

COMMENTS:
What are you talking about?

Every country that can veto a resolution not in their interest does so. Are you saying that if the US compromised on things it strongly believes in then the rest of the UN would just fall in love with the US.

BTW, the US does support and put forward most of the resolutions aimed at restraining rogue nations around the world. It is Russia and the worker's paradise of China that block them (like with Iran and Sudan).
by FiddleFaddleOnLSD on Thu Sep 14, 06 1:29pm [+]

Only the security council can veto and guess who vetoes the most?

And since when did the totalitarian capitalist state of China become a workers paradise?

Voted : No
I'll say that they're exercising their right of free speech in whaking something they don't like. I'm sure that there are those who'll say similar things about those of us who bash U.S. policy while remaining silent about what the UN does and fails to do.
by Truthseeker013 on Thu Sep 14, 06 2:17pm [+]

Most UN bashers don't realize that the UN is a wonderful source of demographic data. Their statistics division superb.

"Disingenuous?" No. The U.N.'s purpose at this point in its history is to provide a forum for the discussion of world problems and the public airing of grievances. It's a kind of customer service center for nations. No one is ever happy with it, but the world would be a much more dangerous place without it.

No one vetoed their actions to stop the conflict in lebanon, which are pathetic and will fail. No one is stopping them from intervening with Iran, and so far their response has been pathetic and will fail.

No one has stopped them from going in to sudan, and yet they won't. No one stopped them from doing anything about the taliban, and yet they did nothing for years.

Of course some people did try to stop them from accepting bribes from saddam and maybe get them to actually enforcing the terms of the cease fire, but that had no impact.

Most of the bills vetoed are knee-jerk reactionary 'we hate Israel' bills that the UN churns out everytime anything happens.

But please, list the times the US has vetoed the UNs plans to really do something about the sudanese genocide, the nuclear weapons program in Iran, the rise of islamic terrorism, or any other real issue that they are currently ignoring.

I forgot the ruled...

Israel = Good and righteous

Countries favourable to US interests = Worthy allies

Countries formerly favourable to US = Evil dicatorships that must be destroyed no matter what cost in human life.

I will try not to forget that axiom
by Steelhamster on Thu Sep 14, 06 6:51pm [+]

So should I take that as a 'no herzog, I will not list the times the US has vetoed those resolutions because the UN never tried to deal with those situations, so the US couldn't have vetoed them even if they wanted to'?

And what exactly to condemnations of Israel have to do with stopping the genocide in Iran? I know it's hard to hear this, but blaming Israel isn't the solution to every one of lifes problems.
by herzog on Thu Sep 14, 06 7:13pm [+]

I see where this ballot is going.

Steel:
Israel is evil
US and western countries with capitalism is evil.
Evil dictatorships must NOT be destroyed. We should let them go on their merry way just like Uncle Adolf.

Although I'm quite sure his REAL target is that the US blocks resolutions against Israel. Which it does because the UN holds Israel to a different standard. The US is the only one who vetoes them, but usually the other allies agree with the US. The US just provides cover. Other countries SLAUGHTER HUNDREDS of THOUSANDS of their OWN PEOPLE, use CHEMICAL WEAPONS on them, send CHILDREN onto the BATTLEFIELD in HUMAN WAVES, commit GENOCIDE, etc., but they get LITTLE if ANY SANCTION from the UN. I NEVER hear steelhamster complaining about that. Oh maybe a little quibble. About how the US has gotten a bloody nose (YAY!!! steel cheers!!) It is more important to bash the US than to stop genocide. You are conspicuously absent from most of the GENOCIDE ballots, steel. Why is that? If you do comment, it is to bash the US, the UN, herzog, other critics of the UN, etc. Why not BASH THE PERPETRATORS OF THE SLAUGHTER???? Shouldn't that be your priority?

So... according to steelhamster if we only stopped defending Israel, the world would be a land of milk and honey.

So why don't you stop being disingenuous steel and admit this ballot is about Israel?
by FiddleFaddleOnLSD on Thu Sep 14, 06 8:24pm [+]

There is at least one UN basher on B&W who has an obsession about hating the UN. You would have to have a psychiatrist explain what's behind that mental disorder.
by cranky on Fri Sep 15, 06 7:57am [+]

I have a problems with any nation who supports state terrorism, then hides behind an ally in order to justify brutality.

I dont especially pick out Israel, but noone with any common sense would condone their methods in Lebanon and the Gaza strip.

The right use the Sudan crisis the same way they used 9/11, as a way of hitting anyone who disagrees with them over the head with it.

9/11 and the Sudan are tragedies to be sure, but you are deluded if you believe the right gives a flying monkey about Sudan.

The position of the right is so weak and tenuous they grasp onto any lifebelt of flotsam to deflect the massive failure of their policies.
by Steelhamster on Fri Sep 15, 06 3:34pm [+]

So again, your fail to answer my question as you failed to answer it on the ballot I made specifically for this topic.

Will you now admit that the US has nothing to do with the UNs failure act effectively against sudan, Iran, lebanon, etc? Or will you continue to blame everything on the US and the jews?
