Since I have frinds serving in Iraq as I type, I might be somewhat biased in saying this, but I'd like to think that sane, humane people would allow the Convention to stand, and would allow it to be reciprocal. But that's just a pipe dream, right?

Adult ballot? D'oh! Must have had 'happy fingers' when i was creating it. sad
by Cathexis on Fri Sep 15, 06 4:50pm [+]

And I'm outraged beyond words. My congresswoman knows my feelings, but she's too busy packing up her office to be concerned. As for my Senator- he's part of the problem.

Not only do I believe they should be protected by the Geneva Coneventions, I believe that King George should get his bloody hands off of it.
by margaret123 on Fri Sep 15, 06 8:18pm [+]

American soldiers and soldiers of almost every country in the world should be, but terrorists should not. And why not? Because they're effing terrorists, that's why! They break every rule in the book and don't deserve our consideration.
by Bostonian on Fri Sep 15, 06 8:31pm [+]

I don't really see a problem with U.S. military ditching the convention...it would give them a taste of their own medicine for a change.

Yes, but tell that to the guys with towels on their heads who enjoy decapitating people in the name of their death cult.

Bostonian: Imprisonment is not proof of guilt. Unless you are psychic, you don't know if the person you have incarcerated is really a terrorist. ALL people deserve these rights.
by Cathexis on Sat Sep 16, 06 12:25pm [+]

Americans are covered by the "Bush Convention" which says that Yanks are better than everyone else, so a completely different set of rules applies.
by cranky on Sat Sep 16, 06 4:07pm [+]

"They break every rule in the book"

That's the case the Bush Administration is making, that in the fight against terrorism, the U.S. should be able to break every rule in the book.
by cranky on Sat Sep 16, 06 4:08pm [+]

Yes of course.

Cath, is this about terrorists not being accorded GC rights? And you feel bush made this up because he's evil and wants to torture these poor freedom fighters?

Read the geneva convention, and then come back and say if it covers terrorists. I think you'll be unpleasantly surprised.
by herzog on Sun Sep 17, 06 6:20pm [+]

herzog: You obviously missed my comment to Bostonian regarding the terrorists distrubing unwillingness to wear name tags and the fact that imprisonment does not mean guilt.

I highly recommend it.
by Cathexis on Mon Sep 18, 06 11:03am [+]

Cath: do they fulfill these conditions:

A. Prisoners of war, in the sense of the present Convention, are persons belonging to one of the following categories, who have fallen into the power of the enemy:

1. Members of the armed forces of a Party to the conflict as well as members of militias or volunteer corps forming part of such armed forces.

2. Members of other militias and members of other volunteer corps, including those of organized resistance movements, belonging to a Party to the conflict and operating in or outside their own territory, even if this territory is occupied, provided that such militias or volunteer corps, including such organized resistance movements, fulfil the following conditions:

(a) That of being commanded by a person responsible for his subordinates;

(b) That of having a fixed distinctive sign recognizable at a distance;

(c) That of carrying arms openly;

(d) That of conducting their operations in accordance with the laws and customs of war.

- Because if they do they are covered by the geneva convention, but if they don't then it's irrelevent. You may as well ask why citizens of other countries aren't entitled to vote in our elections.
by herzog on Mon Sep 18, 06 6:22pm [+]

Our soldiers on the other hand to wear recognizable uniforms, answer to a superior commander who is responsible for them and are fighting for an established nation, so there is no question that these rules apply to our soldiers, although our enemies seldom recognize this fact, much the apathy of the left.

Every legitimate Government is better off playing by the rules and co-operating to bring down those that would play by no rules.
