ARE VIOLENT VIDEO GAMES SPAWNING A NEW CULTURE OF KILLERS?

[+] ballot by Jinn_the_Kafir

Investigators in Montreal, Canada have found strong links to video game violence with the behavior of rampage shooter and murderer Kimveer Gill, who entered a college on Wednesday and shot 21 people.

This bares a striking similarity to the behavior of Eric Harris and Derek Klebold, the mass-murderers of the Columbine incident.

All these killers had an intense fascination with violent video games and weapons.

Is there some connection between these killers and violent video games? Do these violent video games fuel the fire for these young men, causing them to shoot other human beings randomly in real life, like a video game?

Yes, there must be a connection to the violent video games
No, there is no connection to the violent video games
I don't know
There's a possible connection but it doesn't account for every case

No. Should we go and ban some books while we are at it? In 1966 a guy up in a tower on the University of Texas campus went on a shooting spree. It wasn't video games that did it. Neither has it been in the other spree shooting cases.

This is just an issue for people who want to censor things. People who want to blame games for problems rather than examine what is wrong with today's culture.

There were no video games in the Crusades, nor the Napoleonic Wars, or WWI an WW2.

Neither was Ted Bundy and Charles Manson exposed to them.

Violence is inate in humans and some act on them, this is not evidence of the influence of Games (or TV, Movies etc)

We all on this site do one of the activities I mention, but I'm sure noone feels the urge to go on a killing spree.

I would also like to commend you on an interesting ballot that gives us an opportunity to debate a subject that isnt so emotive as some of your subjects tend to be and karma is winging its way to you.

Actually video games can do the opposite and help you not do things like that.

But in the end if you are going to do something like that then you will whether you have watched violent movies or played video games or have had nothing to do with either.
Samething for websites and clothes.

Maybe, Jinn. Here's the tough part for me to swallow: Millions upon millions of children and young adults play violent video games every day, and the vast, vast majority of them not only do not commit murder, but they don't even think of commiting murder. So, is it the games, or is it an already twisted mind that watches the games and goes bonkers? I'd have to say it was more the boy than the game.

^Good point.

Perhaps these young people are already pre-programed (for lack of a better word), and they are just drawn to these games out of interest.

I do know however, that in the case of all three (named in ballot), had acquired very violent video games. Ones that are not main-stream, that can't be purchased in regular stores. Police said the video games that Gill had were purchased over the internet. "Postal" was the name of one of them. The player (character) is allowed to go bezerk, and shoot innocent citizens and random.

No, connection other than nut jobs who would want to hurt others naturally gravitate to these types of games.

Agreed.

I have to say that although subjects like this do deserve attention so that we can learn from them, I do have some qualms about his picture being shown everywhere. That's exactly what he would have wanted and has now (albeit in death) succeded in one of his goals...

Fiddle, you mentioned the UT Tower shootings. I had the opportunity to meet Ray Martinez (the Texas Ranger who brought an end to the spree) a couple of years ago. Very interesting man. Was a great pleasure in getting to speak with him.

A lot of my younger cousins are hooked on these hyper-violent shooters, but none of them show any truly homicidal tendencies. In order for stuff like that to turn a person into a killer, the wiring has to be bad ab initio, IMO.

Please, people have been killing way before video games. Jeez, public executions used to be family fare in times past. What about watching gladiators and duels? The seed of violence is there. There are more people on the planet nowadays, so the probability of encountering a violent child is higher as well. If someone wants an excuse, they'll find a scapegoat.
