GERMAN OPERA HOUSE CANCELS PROVOCATIVE MOHAMMED STAGING

Berlin's Deutsche Oper has removed the provocative staging of a Mozart opera from its schedule for fear of enraging Muslims, the opera house said in a statement.

One of three opera houses in the German capital, it cancelled director Hans Neuenfels's production of "Idomeneo", a 1781 drama set in ancient Crete, because authorities warned it could present an "incalculable security risk".

In the staging, which sparked audience protests during its premiere in December 2003, King Idomeneo presents the lopped-off heads of Poseidon, Jesus, Buddha and the Prophet Mohammed and displays them on four chairs.

German critics saw the show at the time as a radical attack on religion and religious wars.

Musical director Kirsten Harms decided to cancel the new staging of the opera, scheduled for November, to avert "any danger to the audience or staff" that could arise from violent protests.

You no doubt noticed that while jesus and buddha were also depicted muslims and buddhists did not threaten violence to get this play removed.

Is this a sign that much of what muslims believe is incapatible with the west? They did not simply stage a protest, which would have been fine, they threatened (and likely would have backed up) violence against these people for doing something they didn't approve of.

Is the cultural belief of using violence to end all criticism of your religion compatible with western beliefs?

Yes, perfectly compatible
No, the muslims should comform to our belief in freedom of speech
The west should go out of it's way to never ever criticize muslims in even the slightest way
Replace Islam and Mohammed with another religion, perhaps Taoism and Lao Tzu, in order to avoid conf

COMMENTS:
And do you think they realize that by giving in to threats every time they are simply encouraging muslims to issue more threats and make more demands?

But what do you expect them to do? Have the opera go on and risk vandalism and rioting?

Where is Liberal Democrat? He'll make an exuse on this

Well, the Opera is certainly in poor taste. One would hope that it wouldn't be staged due to lack of ticket sales.

I just don't understand why everyone feels the need to kiss people's nether regions every time someone gets a little offended.

The audience protests of 2003, were they muslim?

Voted : No, the muslims should comform to our belief in freedom of speech
BUT, a lot of Muslims are good, normal people, regular as me- it's sad They're lumped in with the idiot Jihadist terrorists, there are all kinds of people going crazy for religion, Evangelicals are also preparing for a second-coming/Holy-War that'll blow all our minds.
When I heard this^ on the news I felt it was ridiculous (don't mess with Mozart) but it's also a scary time to test the extremists.. well more and more people will be killed in the name of God either way.

I learned more about this opera today, I really wish it wasn't an issue, the world's a hopeless shame to me.

I don't know. The point of that scene in the play doesn't seem to be wanting to criticise Islam specifically. The point was more so to criticise religion in general supposedly. Therefore, perhaps they should just adapt the scene to something else. Remove Mohammed from the play. The staging could replace the one of Mohammed with an image of some other religion. Perhaps a figure of Taoism? A lopped of head of Lao Tzu (the founding figure of Taoism) to replace that of Mohammed? That would settle things wouldn't it? A variety of religions would be put on display to be criticised- one religion originating in Europe (Ancient Greek religion), one religion originating in the Middle East (Christianity), one that originated in India (Buddhism), and one that originiated in China (Taoism). By replacing Islam and Mohammed with Taoism and Lao Tzu, the play could critique religion in general and not have to worry too much about Muslims, who in general are offended by any attempt to create an image, wheter good or bad, of their prophet Mohammed. Muslims are offended by any artificial image of Mohammed, whereas Christians, Buddhists, the ancient Greeks, and Taoists have like to build statues of the figures of their religions.

My solution would allow the play to stay open, maintain its aim of criticising religion in general, and avoid sparking conflict. What do you think herzog? Replacing Islam and Mohammed with Taoism and Lao Tzu seems best to me. I am Taoist and would not at all be offended at all. And all the people I know who are Taoist, would not be offended even in the slightest bit either.

It probably wasn't as good as "Springtime for Hitler".

We need to respect people of ALL faiths.
by One_Truth on Wed Sep 27, 06 8:35am [+]

OT: respect goes both ways. They can't bitch about disrespecting their religion one minute and the next call for the deaths of all infidels.

Besides which, we in the west believe in free speech, you can protest, but you can't threaten with violence. Not over something like this. When they consider tolerating our civilized beliefs then perhaps we can talk about not ridiculing their primitive ways quite so much.
by herzog on Wed Sep 27, 06 9:25pm [+]

Besides which this opera wasn't even about muslims, they had representatives of many religions apparently and were criticizing religion in general.
