COP KILLING SPARKS IMMIGRATION DEBATE

[+] serious ballot by herzog
created Tue Sep 26, 06

Sept. 25, 2006 — The shooting of a Houston police officer has sparked a new battle over immigration.

Juan Leonardo Quintero, an illegal immigrant, has been charged with killing a Houston police officer last week after a routine traffic stop.

Police Chief Harold Hurtt blamed the federal government for failing to secure U.S. borders.

Quintero allegedly shot Officer Rodney Johnson four times in the head while in handcuffs in the back seat of his patrol car.

Johnson arrested Quintero during a routine traffic stop for speeding but apparently missed the suspect's gun in a pat-down search.

Following the shooting, a video showed Houston police officers pulling open the back doors of Johnson's patrol car and yanking the suspect out of the back seat.

"It's very easy to make a mistake. I am not saying a mistake was made," one Houston police officer said. "Unfortunately, we are in the business where a mistake can kill you."

The suspect should not have been in the United States.

Quintero was deported in 2004 after a conviction for indecency with a child.

"The subject was deported, and yet he came back, so if the government fulfilled their responsibility of protecting the border we would probably not be standing here today," Hurtt said.

The Houston Police Department has been struggling this year to deal with the influx of Katrina evacuees and an immigration problem that is only getting worse.

Border Patrol said thousands of illegal immigrants crossed into the United States each month.

Johnson received a commendation for valor for pulling several children from a burning building.

He leaves behind a wife who is also a police officer and their five children.

He was already deported once, and was only able to sneak back in because the border situation is so lax. He didn't come here simply to do jobs that americans won't, he came here and killed an american police officer in cold blood.

Are the only reasons for asking for real border security based on racism? Or are their legitimate reasons to demand scrutiny of who we let in?

Opposing illegal immigration is based exclusively on racism
There are legit reasons to scrutinize who we do and do not let in
It's a matter of national security

Too many Mexicans** choose to enter our country by sneaking in and NOT going through all the inconvenient paperwork and hoop-jumping to either live/work here legally or become citizens.
Some Mexicans are fine, hardworking people who value family life, some come for the free medical care and welfare benefits, some are carrying on their drug trafficking, some just want a chance at a better life, some are scuzball criminals, some want their babies born here just to claim a citizenship (a law I would do away with!), and so on.
Absolutely, we need to know about people who leave their home country to come to the U.S. Is it for vacation? Do they have relatives here? How long will they stay? Will they be working here? Are they criminals seeking to avoid apprehension? Do they have violent criminal histories? Are they terrorists? Are they infected with virulent diseases? etcetcetc
It wouldn't matter to me if it was **Norwegians or Chinese or Africans who were our immediate neighbors. In my opinion, it is the motives and the behaviors of the foreigners that count. In other words, "Who are you and why are you here?" Very simple.

I'm all for increased border security. I have always maintained, and continue to maintain that this is something we should have started focusing on on September 12th, 2001.

Is racism the only reason? No.

Is it one of the most common, hidden reasons? Yes.

BTW, taking one anecdotal story and generalizing it to an entire group is mentally sloppy.

Or are you seriously suggesting that all us caucasions are serial- killer cannibals?
by Cathexis on Wed Sep 27, 06 6:53am [+]

^ Whats anecdotal about properly reported news? If the news is anecdotal then what isnt? and how are you supposed to find out the facts on, say, violent crime? Go hand around a dark street in downtown Compton and see if you get murdered or not?

Also, the term caucasian refers to RACE, whereas Mexican (if we assume that was the nationality of the immigrant in question) is a geographical/nationality term. Your comparative example is flawed in that respect.

Would the individuals who voted for the first option do me the favour of revealing their identity please?

I need to make sure I avoid having any form of communication with you in future.

Thanking you in advance.

What Cathexis is saying is that, from a purely statistical and sociological standpoint, one would never base their conclusions about a large group of individuals based on the actions of a single individual. It's inaccurate.

When people take polls countrywide (U.S.), for example, they don't poll one person, or a dozen, or even a hundred -- they poll a thousand or more and determine the margin of error. The more people polled, the smaller the margin of error.
(I'm not even referring to this specific case, since Herzog isn't implying that illegal immigrants tend to shoot people more than other groups. Nervertheless, I could find hundreds upon hundreds of similar incidents involving caucasian males and then falsely conclude that caucasian males tend to be violent murderers.)
People do this all the time with the media. Of course, I'm basing THAT assumption on my own experience, so I understand that what I just said is a generalization.

CATHEXIS!!

Here you go, again. First, it was not the first Houston Police Officer killed by an illegal immigrant. Almost daily, an illegal immigrant is involved in crime in or near Houston. (Look at archived issues of THE HOUSTON CHRONICLE.)
Oftentimes the crime is brutal - killing, raping - and often the illegal immigrant runs from the scene.
How do I know this? I am currently living near Houston, Texas, and have friends there including a Harris County Deputy Sheriff.

Cath: you believe the 'most common reason" for not wanting to allow in everyone without a single background check, in the midst of a war on terror, is racism? The majority do not follow the perfectly legitimate reasons of national security and crime prevention?

And the point is this guy would have never been here to kill americans if border patrol had done their job. You do not have a right to cross our border at will and murder americans. And if you think this is the first and only case of this, well send me your address and I'll buy you a subscription to some newspaper because you are obviously out of the loop.
