WHAT OBLIGATION, IF ANY, DOES A GROUP HAVE TO SELF-REGULATE?

[+] serious ballot by herzog
ACTIVE Wed Sep 27, 06 - Thu Sep 27, 07

Religious, political, special interest, etc. Any group with a large number of members is bound to have some extremists.

So to what extent do the majority have a responsibility to reign in their more extreme members?

For instance, an enviromental advocacy group is working legally to improve the enviroment. But some of their members get impatient, announce at a meeting their intent to do something more significant, then go off and blow up some oil refineries. Do the other members have any obligation to denounce these acts in public, contact the authorities, make it clear they don't stand for these things, etc? Or are they entirely free of any responsibilities?

1 - groups have absolutely no obligation to reign in, criticize, or inform on their radical members
2 - criticize them whenever asked their opinion, but don't go too far out of their way to do so
3 - they ought to speak out against them, but nothing more
4 - criticize them publicly, and cooperate with authorities when asked to do so
5 - condemn them frequently in harsh terms, actively inform on their activities to the authorities

COMMENTS:
And in case it wasn't clear the difference between 4 and 5 is that in 4 you simply cooperate when the authorities come looking for information, in 5 you seek them out and inform them of your volition.

If they are or are likely to commit crimes.

Some political action groups I have been involved in would not tolerate extremist jackasses, especially those who are likely to commit crimes. That puts innocent people at risk and the entire movement at risk as well.

Tom: turning in terrorists is a nazi-esque tactic? Wow, no wonder the left opposes the war on terror.

The goal of the group is the primary focus and should not be subverted due to infighting. However, if people affiliated with the cause are engaging in unethical or unlawful acts, the group should make sure they are not supporting/ validating the rogue elements in any way and should condemn them if the topic comes up.

This goes for all groups ... Environmentalists, Religious groups, Republicans ...

(I am one Dirtee Dirtee "leftist" (I guess) who does not oppose fighting terror, HZ. What I oppose is the energy, time, money and goodwill we've wasted "helping" Iraq - hopefully not turning it into another cause for hopeless extremists.
It's odd all the Hate you have for millions of fellow citizens. I've asked before- if you're sure your leaders (& the lawyers & lobbyists & M-IC) are so right and good then why not show something besides constant bitterness?)
