Wis. lawmaker wants teachers to carry guns

He cites Israel, Thailand; school official says problems are not that bad

The Associated Press

Updated: 12:51 a.m. CT Oct 5, 2006

MADISON, Wis. - In the wake of school shootings in Wisconsin, Colorado and Pennsylvania during the last two weeks, a state legislator says he plans to introduce legislation that would allow teachers, principals, administrators and other school personnel to carry concealed weapons.

Rep. Frank Lasee, a Republican, said Wednesday that, while his idea may not be politically correct, it has worked effectively in other countries.

"To make our schools safe for our students to learn, all options should be on the table," he said. "Israel and Thailand have well-trained teachers carrying weapons and keeping their children safe from harm. It can work in Wisconsin."

In Thailand, where officials have been waging a bloody fight with Muslim separatists for the last two years, some teachers carry weapons for self defense as they are viewed as part of the government. In Israel, teachers are not allowed to carry weapons in the school, but security guards at the entrances are armed.

Lasee stressed that the measure would hinge on school staff members getting strict training on the use of the weapons. He also acknowledged he would have to work around a federal law that bans guns on school grounds.

The director of school safety for Milwaukee Public Schools, Pete Pochowski, expressed opposition to Lasee's proposal.

"Statistically, the safest place for a child to be is in school," Pochowski said. "We have problems in our schools, but not to the point where we need to arm our teachers and principals."

Children in countries such as Israel and Thailand are far more vulnerable to daily violence than students in America, he said.

"In the country we live in, we have a lot of freedom," Pochowski said, "and we have to expose ourselves to some danger to keep that."

Not yet. If there are a statistically significant number of copy cat killers, maybe then.

What skylab said.

As for 'bad kids not making it home' and 'increasing violence'... alot of teachers out there arent the smartest people in the world (one reason why I wouldnt want them to have a gun in a classroom of children), but that's really silly to assume that some would actually use their guns on innocent students just because they were misbehaving.

If they were allowed, it would take more than a basic firearms training course, because there are students out there who honestly would try to take the gun away so they could use it.

I've seen teachers driven to tears by students who cause endless disruptions in classes. If they'd had guns, I'm almost certain that there'd've been student brains on the tile. No way, Jose...

Why not just outlaw the bearing of firearms period? Why keep treating the sympton instead of the cause. Teachers are meant to be educators not policemen. How many more American kids are gonna die before they make it harder to get a gun?
by Chomsky on Fri Oct 06, 06 5:48pm [+]

Banning them would be treating the symptom. When you have students and adults going in a shcool with the intent to kill, guns are not the reason for them doing it. They're the tool used, but they're not the root cause.

The violence will keep increasing until the root of the cause is determined. Until then, we're just fooling ourselves if we think the problems will disappear with the banning of guns (or knives, or machettes, rocks, screwdrivers, etc..). The cause is much deeper and that's what needs to be addressed. Because it's going to keep building up if it isn't. Then there's really going to be some problems...

I agree though Chomsky, it should be harder to get a gun. It's actually supposed to be, but the law is not enforced. With the exception of the people who apply for concealed weapons permits and undergo FBI background checks, no one checks the forms that someone buying a rifle has to fill out when they have to state such things as criminal, mental, arrest, drug, sexual abuse, or spousal abuse history.

In all my time of working with local law enforcement, I have never known an instance where a probationer, parolee, or convicted felon's home and property was thoroughly searched for firearms. That says alot right there.

How is more people having legal access to guns going to possibly subside violence, murder ... etc.?!
by Guest User from [82.201.225.56] on Sat Oct 14, 06 2:11pm [+]

if they person wanted to kill someone that bad or go against them. They will find a way to do something if they really wanted to. A gun is just a weopon a way of making it easier, but the real problem is the person behing the gun. Just threatening them with guns will either trigger the student to bring a gun and try to challenge the teacher. also they might take it as a joke and try to get it away from the teacher.

I think schools need armed security guards but i think a teacher having guns is a bit risky, what if they're a little off or something...and off the whole class?

Voted : No, teachers shouldn't carry guns
Absolutely not. Here we are trying to decrease school violence and we are going to arm school faculty?! It will only convince students more that they don't live in a safe enviroment. That they need guns as well. And what if perchance a particularly angsty student gets a hold of the firearm? Can you say rampage? So many times it's happening. Students get guns from an outside source and go crazy in their school. Now if the gun is already IN the school, it's only to said student's benefit. It's not that I doubt the teachers across America that they won't be able to keep the gun a safe distance away from students, but they are people all the same. They have slip-ups, they make mistakes, accidents happen. But is that what we're going to say when an unnecesary shot is fired in a school? If by chance a teacher loses control, or a student is a little too curious? Accidents happen?! Is that what people said during the shooting at Virginia Tech? Or NIU? Accidents happen? We need to eliminate any factor that could possibly lead to more violence in America. We are currently no one of those countries where you live in fear just praying you'll get to school safely. Granted safety is never guaranteed, but all the same. We are far safer here in America than in Israel or Thailand. Instead of providing america's education staff with guns, increase security. But increasing the chances of a shooting and giving more civillians a prime opportunity to violently release their anger is certainly not the answer

Voted : then the students will feel like they need to carry weapons to protect themselves from them.
no teachers shouldn't be aloud to carry guns. if they do than students will think that they deserve to have guns for protection as well. and eventually it'll lead to students having guns. then those fist fights they get into could turn into a quick and easy death for anyone there. i agree with Chomsky "teachers are supposed to be educates not police men." if we let our standards fall than everything we worked for as a country to make this place a better place for all. that will all fall apart.
