WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOUR CHILD WAS BORN LOOKING LIKE THIS?

[+] ballot by Applerod
created Thu Oct 05, 06

This is Juliana. She was born with "Treacher Collins" syndrome. By all accounts she is the worst case ever recorded. She was born with no upper jaw, no eye sockets, no cheekbones, and malformed ears. In fact, she's missing about half the bones in her face. Due to the severity of her deformity, she cannot speak, must breathe through a hole punctured into her throat, and can only eat via a tube inserted directly into her stomach. She is of normal intelligence.
In the first three years of her life, she has undergone about 14 surgeries (you can see her progress in the pics), and is going to need dozens more. (The last pic is with her sister.)

I really don't think I'd be strong enough to go through with raising a child with such a horrific deformity, knowing all of the implications healthwise and in terms of daily life. I'm fairly astounded by her parents' will and dedication.

What do you think? Would you be willing to raise a child with such a deformity?

I'd raise the child
I wouldn't raise the child (adoption)

COMMENTS:
I've always said that about 90% of all the abortions performed today should be banned, but cases like these fall into the 10% that should be allowed. Cold? Yes. Humane? Yes.

What can one say? If we were all blind would we give a damn about her physical appearance?

Her parents are a testament to in dominantability the human spirit and the power of love.

Love is not a feeling, it is an action, and these parents are wonderfully proving it. I salute and respect them. I don't know how I would handle something like this. I think I might be selfish and get mad at God. These parents set such a great example.
by forgetmenot on Thu Oct 05, 06 9:34pm [+]

Yes, I myself couldn't do it; (not that I'm planning to have kids for a good long while.) I just don't think I could bear watching the extreme physical and mental suffering the child would have to endure.
Can you imagine growing up and living like this?
by Applerod on Fri Oct 06, 06 12:49am [+]

You love your child no matter what, parental love comes without condition.

So sad. But, she will have a chance at a good life because of her strong family and wonderful medical care!

Goodspeed to Juliana and her family.

If i were a dad-to-be i wouldnt want to give my kid the right of life looking and suffering like that in which i think abortion or euthanasia would come to mind.

"..She is of normal intelligence."

Why take life away from someone who could someday discover a way to prevent a disease like this. Looks arent everything.

It doesn't matter what's on the outside, it's what's on the inside that counts. Her parents obviously love her very much, and I wish them all the best. They've all got a tough road ahead.
by karellen on Fri Oct 06, 06 7:48pm [+]

that's just cruel.what did she do to deserve that kind of punishment? nobody should have to suffer like that.
by neothe1 on Fri Oct 06, 06 9:44pm [+]

that is so sad!id be so upset but i know that no one else would be able to love her/him like her/his own mother so i would raise the child.

Not being mean spirited at all, I don't think the parents should let this child go, out in public like they do. My 7 year old grandaughter saw a picture of Juliana on a wed site accidentally and she was terribly frightened. If This were my baby I would not subject anyone to seeing her. She has one of the worst deformities that I've ever seen. I hope her parents will have the strenghth to face each new day with this little girl. It must be so hard.

Horrific deformity? I beleive deformities come from the INSIDE.
I have met some people who are so selfish and egocentric, that I find them even more repulsive than a pile of crap. Liliana is one of the most beautiful babies I have ever seen. She has been blessed with wonderful parents, friends and commuity and they likewise have been blessed to be a part of her life. According to her stories on the web and news, she is a delight.

God has a special place in heaven for innocent, pure, beautiful children who have to endure the physical suffering as well as the emotional suffering caused by ignorant people. She was created by the heavenly father in his image so in my eyes she is the most beautiful person I've ever seen not to mention the strongest and bravest. God Bless her and her parents who were strong enough not to give up the fight. Stay strong and keep fighting

I don't think a person truely knows how they would feel until faced with the situation. You always love your child and her parents are there to support her and make her life as normal as possible. For those people that feel she should not be allowed in public....she has EVERY right to live her life to the fullest. People that are so judgemental and shallow are the problem, if a child is afraid of her, then explain to them what happened. Then maybe they can grow up to be more understanding and compassionate. I don't think anyone can judge another person's right to life, let her decide!

lots of plastic surgery, but i would love her no matter what...just because people may think she is not beautiful on the outside, doesn't mean she isn't beautiful on the inside...

I wouldn't be able to raise a child that like. *shakes head* I would end up loosing it. I admire her parents for standing by her, because I wouldn't be able to.

This is an obvious candidate for a face transplant. I'm not being cruel and I acknowledge that a lot of work would need to be done. Maybe it's too far advanced for now, but I, too, would compliment her parents for their love and dedication.
