it's becoming more and more viable thanks to advancing technology. envision a 4 wheeled powered bicycle, completely enclosed with air conditioning. I would give up my truck for that.

Yup, I think creative people would come up with some very inovative ideas for pedal power...and get rich. A hole new mega industry.
Great idea, great way of making us all at the same time exercise, breath clean air, lower traffic congestion and road rage, road deaths of course would plummet, and zero fuel consumption! UTOPIA! Wheely great ballot.
"envision a 4 wheeled powered bicycle, completely enclosed with air conditioning." You mean a car?
Voted : I don't see it as possible
I live 30 miles from my job and 20 from school...so.....no.
What Freon said. Some people have to commute too far.
Voted : I'd love it, and I would gladly live there
But could I have training wheels on mine?

The reason you have to commute so far is because society has been built and designed around a culture of roads and automobiles. If everyone assimilated to riding bikes they wouldn't end up living so far away from their needs. Of course many people might also think that it is ridiculous to reside so far from your work and school, and having to drive a car back and forth each day. Essential services in a bicycle world can be commuter trains and buses.

I don't see it possible. In some places, it could be very realistic. But not everyone lives in those places and not everyone has careers/jobs that would allow it.
Voted : Sure, why not?
It would take a serious restructuring (e.g., ditch the concept of suburbs & exburbs), and stop development based on the premise of wide-ranging mobility, but it could be done and there would be significant benefits.

How many bales of hay will a bicycle carry?
Voted : I don't see it as possible
Not that it's not a good idea... In this day and age, everyone is always busy and on the move. It would be very hard to be relient upon bicycles. Like Lava said, transportation of goods would virtually be 0 to none. If this were to really happen, most of our cities would need a complete redo of layout and design. It's just not reasonable. On the other hand, if a society was built around the bicycle, it would be different. Even still, I think it would be a major step in the wrong direction.

as long as there were trains and subways
